Experience Bamboo Thinning and Sustainable Practices at Inagi Megumi No Satoyama

Discovering Nature at Inagi Megumi No Satoyama

On November 1, 2025, over 2,000 visitors with a passion for nature and sustainability gathered at "Inagi Megumi No Satoyama" in Inagi City, Tokyo. This lush area, established by Pal System Tokyo in 2004, offers a unique blend of agriculture and nature experiences.

The initiative is part of a broader goal by the Pal System Federation, guided by Director Atsuyuki Shibusawa, to engage the community through sustainable practices. Visitors are welcomed for seasonal activities like bamboo shoot harvesting, agricultural experiences, insect observation, and, notably, bamboo thinning workshops. Over the years, these programs foster a connection between families and nature, and this event especially emphasized collaboration with local volunteers.

A Commitment to Environmental Conservation

The bamboo thinning workshop drew participants from various sectors, including members of the Pal System Cooperation Association and local manufacturers. This activity is part of ongoing training sessions aimed at promoting sustainable cohabitation with nature. The group included about 20 individuals, eager to explore the best practices for managing and preserving this essential environment.

Experts from nuucoto, a company dedicated to managing and conserving forests, and JUON NETWORK, a certified NPO focused on environmental education, shared their knowledge and experiences. They guided the participants through the site, discussing the importance of maintaining the local ecosystem and the role of community in these efforts.

Engaging in Bamboo Thinning

The bamboo grove was soon buzzing with activity as the group divided into teams to undertake their bamboo thinning tasks. Under the guidance of experts, participants learned how essential it is to thin out bamboo to promote healthy growth and prevent overcrowding.

Working on steep slopes presented its challenges. One group tackled a particularly thick bamboo tree, while another managed to cut down three thinner pieces. Participants shared their experiences of the physical demands of the task, expressing thoughts like, "Predicting the fall direction of the bamboo is tough," and, "The steep terrain really puts a strain on your legs." These sentiments reflect the physical engagement required, emphasizing not just the hands-on aspect, but also the connections forged through teamwork.

Promoting a Healthy Environment

By March 2018, approximately 21 hectares of land were designated as a "Natural Environment Conservation Area" by Inagi City. The conservation efforts managed by nuucoto align with the broader objectives of the Pal System Tokyo. Together with municipal staff and participants, they deepen these vital environmental partnerships.

In 2023, the Pal System Group announced its ambitious environmental and energy policies, aiming for a carbon-neutral society and nurturing natural coexistence. The organization is committed to various initiatives like cleanup activities and public awareness campaigns to reduce food waste under the phrase, "Thanks Earth! – Actions we can take now for the planet."

Towards a Sustainable Future

As the world approaches the International Year of Cooperatives in 2025, the Pal System Federation plans to continue partnering with various cooperatives, regional organizations, and product creators. Their combined efforts aim for a more sustainable society, ensuring the protection of our planet for generations to come.
