Royal Canin Teams Up with Athletes to Celebrate Dogs at the AKC National Championship
In a remarkable collaboration to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the American Kennel Club (AKC) National Championship, Royal Canin, a brand renowned for its expertise in pet health nutrition, has assembled an exceptional team of athletes who are not just champions in their fields but also passionate dog owners. This celebration, featuring notable athletes such as LPGA star Michelle Wie West, Indiana Hoosiers quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Fernando Mendoza, and WTA doubles champion Asia Muhammad, exemplifies the unique bond between humans and their canine companions.
The MVP Team's Mission
The assembled group of athletes represents a diverse spectrum of sports, uniting through their love for dogs. This year, Royal Canin’s Most Valuable Pup (MVP) team aligns itself with the AKC National Championship to recognize the effort and dedication demonstrated by both dog handlers and their four-legged partners. “At Royal Canin, we recognize the commitment that handlers and dogs dedicate to competing in such prestigious events, mirroring the drive our athlete partners showcase in their careers,” shared Don MacIntosh, vice president of the professional division at Royal Canin North America.
This initiative not only honors the excellence found within competitive dog shows but also celebrates the admiration pet owners have for their canine companions who play an essential role in their everyday lives. According to Michelle Wie West, her English Sheepdogs, Gatsby and Daisy, alongside her Cane Corso, Rome, have been pivotal in her most momentous life experiences. “I feel they are my true MVPs, always giving their best, which is why I want to provide them with what they need to thrive,” she explains, highlighting the deep bond she shares with her pets.
New Features This Year
The 2025 AKC National Championship, sponsored by Royal Canin, will take place on December 28 and will be aired on ABC from 12 to 3 PM ET. A noteworthy addition to this year's event is Royal Canin’s Breederboard, an interactive feature allowing audience members to vote for their preferred breed MVP based on the show. This innovative twist aims to engage viewers and recognize the significance of the breeds showcased at the event.
Fernando Mendoza shared his own heartfelt sentiments regarding his Labrador Retriever, Scout, emphasizing the unwavering support and joy that his dog brings to his life. “Coming home from school to see Scout is one of my favorite parts of the day. Just being with him makes everything better, which is what makes him a real MVP in my book,” he remarked.
