MAHLE Sells US Engineering Services Business to Dumarey Group for Strategic Focus

On January 8, 2025, a noteworthy transaction was announced in the automotive supply industry. MAHLE, a key player in the engineering services for vehicles, disclosed its decision to divest its US branch of MAHLE Powertrain LLC to the Dumarey Group, a Belgian firm. The agreement, signed in late 2024, encompasses the engineering facilities located in Plymouth, Michigan, which currently employ approximately 70 professionals. These individuals specialize in providing essential testing and engineering services tailored to the demands of US customers.

The decision to sell comes in light of a strategic review conducted by MAHLE, focusing on its long-term positioning within the market. With the competitive landscape of engineering services in the United States undergoing significant shifts, MAHLE recognized that the relatively small size and market share of its US operations limited its potential for substantial future growth. This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Marco Warth, Vice President of MAHLE Corporate Research and Advanced Engineering, who expressed confidence in the Dumarey Group's commitment to lead the business toward a successful trajectory post-sale.

While this sale marks a pivotal moment for MAHLE in the US market, it's important to note that the transaction does not include MAHLE Powertrain branches located outside of the United States. These overseas entities will continue to operate within the larger framework of the MAHLE Group, maintaining their focus on engineering services across UK, Germany, and China. As one of the core subsidiaries, MAHLE Powertrain plays a crucial role in providing engineering and consultancy services also for the design, testing, development, and integration of advanced electrified powertrain systems alongside hybridized internal combustion engines.

The Dumarey Group, previously known as PUNCH Group, is recognized for its strong presence in the powertrain solutions sector, focusing on development and manufacturing. According to Pierpaolo Antonioli, CTO of the Dumarey Group, the acquisition of MAHLE Powertrain USA marks a significant leap in their strategy, reinforcing their deep-rooted connections with the US automotive market. The alignment of the Dumarey Group's dedicated growth strategy promises to expand the operational capabilities of MAHLE's former US division, thereby enhancing customer value and maintaining the heritage of partnership with US-based companies.

This sale transaction is scheduled to close in the first quarter of 2025. As MAHLE continues to focus on technologies aimed at creating a climate-neutral mobility solution, including advancements in thermal management and electrification, this strategic decision enables it to reallocate resources towards its core objectives. In its commitment to innovation, MAHLE's ongoing efforts are celebrated in an industry increasingly focused on reducing CO2 emissions, making their decision to concentrate on global growth initiatives of utmost importance. With nearly €13 billion in sales in 2023 and a robust global workforce, MAHLE remains a cornerstone in advancing the automotive industry's evolution toward sustainability and efficiency.
