Encouraging Voter Participation in Japan's Upcoming 2025 Election
Recently, a press conference was held to promote voter participation for the upcoming 27th House of Councillors election in Japan. The event featured actor Yosuke Eguchi and model-actor Aiura Ikumi, who have been appointed as the election awareness ambassadors by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. With the election set to take place on July 20, 2025, the duo urged potential voters to be proactive in their voting rights and to inform themselves about early voting options.
Yosuke Eguchi expressed his excitement about his new role, stating, “This is my first experience in such a position, and I hope we can contribute in some way during this election.” Aiura Ikumi echoed his sentiments, adding, “I feel very honored to be part of this. Although I am a bit nervous, I aim to encourage as many people as possible to take action.”
Yosuke shared his experience with early voting, having already cast his ballot before the formal election date. He mentioned, “I went first thing in the morning due to work, so there weren’t many people there. However, as I passed the voting place later, I saw families and groups of friends voting together. It’s great to have the flexibility to vote at a convenient time, and I appreciate the option of early voting for those who cannot make it on election day.”
Focusing on the current trend of increased early voting participants, he urged those who haven’t yet voted to take that important step as a way to express their opinions in a society they live in.
Marking 10 years since the voting age was lowered to 18, Aiura reflected on her own journey. “When I received the right to vote at 18, I felt very grown-up and was filled with a sense of responsibility. The thought that my vote could make a difference made the decision of whom to vote for an exciting experience.” She also shared her plans for early voting since she has work commitments on the main voting date. “I want to gather enough information before I vote.”
In closing, both Eguchi and Ikumi appealed to the public, stating, “Each individual’s vote is the first step towards creating a better society. We are committed to spreading the word about the importance of voting, and we encourage everyone to motivate one another to participate in this crucial civic duty!”
