Lifelong Joins Washington's Innovative Long-Term Care Program for Enhanced Community Support
In a significant advancement for community health services, Lifelong, a renowned organization with over 40 years of experience in enhancing access to food and health, has been selected as one of the inaugural providers for Washington state's WA Cares Fund. This long-term care benefit program, the first of its kind in the nation, aims to address the unmet needs of the state’s aging population and individuals living with disabilities.
Lifelong's selection reflects its unwavering commitment to the mission that access to health and nutrition is a fundamental human right—not a privilege limited by one's financial situation. CEO James Shackelford emphasized this belief, stating, "At Lifelong, we believe access to health and food is a human right, not a privilege." For over a decade, Lifelong has provided critical services to Washington's aging and disability communities, ensuring they have the resources necessary to maintain their independence and quality of life.
Through the WA Cares Fund, Lifelong aims to expand its services and support, helping clients navigate long-term care systems and connect with community resources. As a contracted provider, Lifelong will facilitate direct connections for eligible individuals to access various covered services. These services include in-home support, safety adaptations for homes, meal delivery, transportation, and access to adaptive equipment—all essential for fostering a supportive living environment for those in need.
The WA Cares Fund is designed to alleviate the financial burden associated with long-term care for working Washingtonians as they age. Funded through minimal payroll contributions of 0.58%, this innovative program offers lifetime coverage of up to $36,500 for long-term care—a benefit that could cover all necessary care for approximately one-third of recipients throughout their lives. This program addresses an urgent concern in the American caregiving landscape; statistics reveal that seven out of ten people will require long-term care support for daily activities, but current systems do not offer sufficient financial solutions.
Traditional Medicare and private health insurance generally do not encompass long-term care, while Medicaid programs typically mandate significant reduction of personal assets to qualify for coverage, leaving many individuals at risk of unmanageable expenses.
Lifelong’s partnership with WA Cares empowers the organization to fulfill its mission of closing these crucial gaps in health care access. Shackelford remarked, "At Lifelong, we have long recognized that no one organization can fill these gaps alone. Partnering with WA Cares allows us to further our mission and connect people to the services they need to live their healthiest lives."
