New Initiative to Support Youth Theatre in Osaka: U-30 Program

The Omatsubaki Museum Cube, managed by Theatre Workshop Co., Ltd. based in Shibuya, Tokyo, has introduced a fresh collaborative initiative aimed at nurturing young theatrical talent. Named the U-30 Support Program, this initiative primarily focuses on providing a platform for young theatre groups in the Kansai region to showcase their productions while also receiving substantial support in various aspects of their work.

As part of the museum's ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of performing arts, the U-30 program complements the existing OMC Lineup partnership, allowing emerging artists under the age of 30 a chance to engage deeply with their craft. The program encourages young directors and playwrights to step into the limelight, thereby contributing to the evolution of Osaka’s cultural landscape.

Overview of the U-30 Support Program

The U-30 initiative specifically targets theatre companies based in the Kansai area or those intending to operate regularly in the region, as long as at least two-thirds of their members are under 30 years of age at the time of application.

Support Offered

The program goes beyond just reducing performance fees; it offers comprehensive support that includes assistance with production planning, technical aspects, and operational management. The goal is to enhance both the artistic quality of the works produced and the foundational support required for these emerging companies to thrive.

A central venue for performances under this initiative is CUBE02, the second-largest customizable space within the Omatsubaki Museum Cube, measuring 100 square meters. Additionally, the museum offers a variety of 10 spaces, known as CUBEs, facilitating rehearsal activities and workshops, with at least 20 hours of space provided free of charge. This structure allows groups to focus entirely on the creation of their works, fostering a conducive environment from conception through to performance.

First Round Participants of the U-30 Program

After announcing the program in June, a substantial number of entries resulted in eight groups being selected for the first cycle. These include a range of fresh faces, from those preparing to showcase their inaugural productions to long-term student theatre groups aiming to continue their activities post-graduation. The diversity among selected companies promises to enrich the overall experience.

1. Baby Run (Osaka): Their first production, DOLL, is a celebrated piece that has won multiple awards, including the Audience Award and Encouragement Award at the 2025 Theatre Competition.
2. Nacht Eulia (Osaka): This company will perform a prize-winning play during their first showing, honing in on the struggles of contemporary life.
3. Osaka Student Theatre Festival (Osaka): This student-led initiative aims to create connections among participants while providing a stage for burgeoning student talent.
4. Angola Steak (Hyogo): Known for their unique blend of comedy and absurdism, they bring a fresh perspective to the stage.
5. wkwork Inc. (Kyoto): This creative production house showcases an innovative approach to theatre that has captured massive audiences.
6. Onreikenyou (Hyogo): This group stands out for their intense thematic explorations within their productions.
7. Yuyushiki Motor Pool (Osaka): Aiming to produce engaging conversations and narrative through their work, they focus on the quirks of daily life.
8. Meiro (Osaka): This art group tackles societal issues through contemporary theatrical performances.
