Explore the Unique Fusion of National Treasures and Manga Onomatopoeia at Tokiwaso Museum

The Tokiwaso Manga Museum, located in Toshima City, is set to launch an exciting new exhibition titled "National Treasures and Onomatopoeia Exhibition - Tokiwaso MM Collection Project Vol. 4" on April 21, 2026. This exhibition takes a bold step into the intricate world of manga by focusing on onomatopoeia, which significantly enhances the emotional impact of comic art.

This exhibition is particularly unique as it applies the expressive sounds of manga to well-known National Treasures such as "Birds and Beasts Person Dance Picture" and the "Shigisan engi emaki." By incorporating manga-style onomatopoeia into these classic works, the museum invites visitors to ponder what sounds best accompany these silent scrolls. Visitors will also have the chance to experience firsthand how onomatopoeia can expand artistic expression beyond mere visual representation, showcasing the synergy between sounds and images.

Exhibition Highlights

  • - Innovation of National Treasures x Onomatopoeia: Dive into the juxtaposition of silent scrolls with vibrant manga sounds. What sounds do these historic pieces invoke? How does the representation differ from typical computer fonts? This immersive experience aims to reveal the extent to which onomatopoeia complements the artistic style and how it broadens the scope of expression.

  • - Comparison of Sound Expressions by Affiliated Artists: The exhibition will feature original works by renowned artists associated with the Tokiwaso, such as Takeo Nagata, Tokuo Yokota, and Naoya Mori. Visitors will see how different artists interpret the same sounds through their distinctive styles, highlighting the diversity of manga expression.
