EY Consulting Supports the Development of Tourism Case Studies for Japan's National Parks

Enhancing Tourism in Japan's National Parks: Insights from EY Consulting

In a pivotal initiative aimed at bolstering tourism within Japan's national parks, EY Strategy and Consulting has collaborated with the Ministry of the Environment to develop a comprehensive set of case studies. These studies focus on creating tourism models that leverage local natural resources, aiming to improve visitor experiences and establish a regionally-driven, high-value tourism framework.

The endeavor, culminating in a collection unveiled on March 31, 2026, serves as a crucial resource for local governments, private sector stakeholders, and community developers. It documents specific examples of how diverse regions can promote tourism that transforms the unique attributes of national parks into captivating stay experiences. This is timely, as the demand for immersive encounters with Japan's awe-inspiring nature continues to grow.

Throughout the diverse landscapes of Japan, ongoing efforts are in place to enhance the allure of stay experiences through various means. Achieving this goal requires not only the traditional administrative approaches to managing public lands but also necessitates a progressive inclusion of private sector expertise. The successful integration of both public and private funding models is fundamental to cultivating high-value tourism experiences, particularly amidst the constraints of public financing.

In this project, EYSC has drawn from its extensive involvement with the National Park Gaining Enjoyment Project, which has championed the promotion of national parks across Japan. By considering the operational aspects of innovative tourism ventures, EYSC gathered and compiled exemplary cases from various natural parks and tourist sites that utilize the area's natural charm. The resulting case studies are organized into two distinct volumes: one focusing on establishing regional promotion systems and the other on public-private collaboration schemes for utilizing public lands.

The freshly compiled collection is rich with detailed analyses, presenting the backgrounds, processes, operational details, results, and business models of various initiatives undertaken nationwide. This meticulous approach serves not only as an inspiration but also as a practical guide for regions aspiring to create environmentally-conscious, sustainable tourism experiences.

Insights from EY Consulting Leaders

EYSC's Public and Social Infrastructure Sector Director, Keiichi Hasegawa, and Manager Tatsuro Suzuki have emphasized the critical role this case study compendium plays in showcasing how regions are constructing frameworks for promoting tourism around their natural resources. With growing global interest in Japan's natural environments, heightened visitor expectations, and an increasing emphasis on local sustainability, the demand for high-value stay experiences that harmonize with nature is more relevant than ever.

The document systematically organizes vital strategies around introducing private expertise, financial innovation, agreement formation, and environmental considerations. These elements reflect the core competencies needed to establish a synergistic cycle of conservation and utilization of Japan’s stunning natural landscapes.

As these exemplary projects and practices gain recognition, it is hoped they will serve as a foundation for nurturing more sustainable and effective tourism initiatives in Japan.
