Foundations to Freedom Launches Young Adult Program
Foundations to Freedom has proudly introduced its
18–24 Young Adult Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Program, made possible by a grant from the
Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). This initiative specifically targets the distinct challenges faced by young adults navigating through critical life transitions while also addressing substance use disorders, a pressing public health issue in Florida.
Importance of Young Adult Support
The ages of 18 to 24 are pivotal in a person's life, often marked by significant changes in education, profession, healthcare, and housing. Unfortunately, these transitions can heighten the risks associated with substance use. Many young individuals find themselves without essential support, making this an essential intervention point for
Foundations to Freedom. By delivering a robust framework that includes
prevention, intervention, and
recovery support, the program aims to cultivate long-term health and self-sufficiency.
Substance use remains a formidable challenge across communities in Florida, with
Volusia County being particularly hard-hit. Recent data indicate alarming rates of
opioid and fentanyl-related overdoses. While there are recent signs pointing to a decline in statewide overdose deaths, the community still requires immediate action to mitigate the crisis affecting families.
Addressing Data Insights
The 2024
Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey highlighted ongoing substance use issues among students in Volusia County, emphasizing the relevance of timely interventions to help youth transition into adulthood. Many lose access to school-based mental health services and face increased risks during this vulnerable stage of life.
Foundations to Freedom's program aims to
bridge this gap by providing tailored support, including:
- - Individualized case management
- - Peer support and recovery coaching
- - Life skills development
- - Workforce training
- - Educational support
- - Connections to behavioral health resources
Through these offerings, the initiative empowers young adults to tackle barriers, nurture resilience, and pursue pathways to long-term recovery and independence.
Leadership and Commitment
The initiative's successful implementation is guided by
Kayla Varvel and
Zachary McCague, who will oversee participant engagement and community collaborations. Their dedication reflects the mission of Foundations to Freedom, which is to empower individuals to realize their potential through opportunities rooted in hope and recovery.
Katherine Russell, Founder and CEO of Foundations to Freedom, stated, "This program focuses on investing in young adults before crises mold their futures. We deeply appreciate the support from the Florida DCF in endorsing specialized services for emerging adults, enabling us to provide crucial, evidence-informed assistance."
A Community Call to Action
Foundations to Freedom firmly believes that recovery is attainable when individuals have suitable access to compassionate care and supportive relationships. The organization is eager to partner with healthcare providers, behavioral health professionals, schools, and local businesses to reinforce the mission of curbing the adverse effects of substance use disorders within Volusia County.
This new program is a significant step toward fostering a healthier tomorrow for young adults by providing them with the resources and support they need to make positive choices.
