iU and Sumida City Collaborate for Safe Micro-Mobility Workshops

On March 7, 2026, iU (the University of Information Management and Innovation) joined forces with Luup, Inc., to conduct a workshop focused on the safe use of micro-mobility devices at the "Spring Campus Common 2026" event. This initiative is part of a larger research project in collaboration with Sumida City, aimed at increasing awareness and promoting safe mobility practices within the community.

The partnership between iU and Sumida City is grounded in a regional agreement that has allowed both organizations to actively pursue various revitalization projects and research initiatives. This specific workshop targeted the safe integration of micro-mobility solutions like electric scooters and bikes, addressing urgent transportation challenges in the urban landscape. The aim is to equip participants with necessary safety knowledge and practical guidance for using these innovative mobility options.

Luup, launched in 2020, focuses on transforming city environments into more accessible spaces, effectively making every area as convenient as a train station. With a mission statement that emphasizes the creation of infrastructure for enhanced urban mobility, Luup offers a micro-mobility sharing service under the brand name “LUUP,” enabling users to rent electric scooters and bicycles via a mobile app.

The program is structured to promote seamless travel, particularly for the 'first' and 'last mile' - essential segments of any journey that often present significant barriers to commuters. Their service seeks to guarantee that everyone can move freely and effortlessly throughout urban spaces without relying solely on traditional transport means.

At the workshop, various activities including discussions, safety tutorials, and distribution of informative handbooks were held. This engagement serves a larger goal of promoting adherence to traffic regulations, ensuring that community members use micro-mobility devices safely and responsibly.

The entirety of the Spring Campus Common 2026 event also featured a range of engaging activities, including the operation of mini steam locomotives, stage performances, workshops, food and drink services themed around the Princess Festival, and exhibitions from Chiba University. Collectively, these efforts underline iU and Luup's commitment to not only enhancing the safety of transport solutions but also energizing the local community through participation and education.

The workshop took place from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM at multiple locations, including the Campus Common and the iU facilities. Future endeavors between iU and Luup are in the works, with plans to continue raising awareness about traffic laws and ensuring a safer environment for micro-mobility users.
