St. Johns County Breaks Ground on Major Park and Library Development
On May 1, 2026, St. Johns County officially launched the construction of the $42 million Ponte Vedra Nocatee Regional Park and Nocatee Library, a transformative project designed to enhance community space and recreational opportunities. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key county officials, including District 3 Commissioner and Board Chair Clay Murphy, District 4 Commissioner Krista Joseph, and other notable community leaders.
This ambitious initiative is the culmination of extensive planning and collaboration, made achievable through a partnership with the Davis family and the PARC Group, who generously donated the land for this endeavor. "This project was made possible through a partnership with the Davis family and the PARC Group, who donated this land to make this vision a reality," noted Chair Murphy during the ceremony.
The Ponte Vedra Nocatee Regional Park and Nocatee Library will feature a comprehensive array of facilities aimed at fostering community engagement. The park will include two multipurpose fields, four softball fields, six pickleball courts, a full-service library, and a well-equipped playground. This space is designed to encourage families and residents to come together for various recreational activities throughout the year.
Commissioner Joseph expressed excitement about the project, stating, "We have wanted a free-standing library for Nocatee for four years… to combine the parks and library is an unbelievable concept!" This sentiment echoes the County's priorities, emphasizing the importance of libraries and parks as essential components of vibrant communities.
As Ryan Kane, Director of the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department, highlighted, the project aims to create a welcoming environment for generations to come: "This is going to be a place where people come together and gather for generations… to ensure we got it right was crucial."
Additionally, Debra Rhodes Gibson, Director of the St. Johns County Public Library System, reinforced the dual objectives of educational and leisure service provision, stating, "These projects carry the weight of providing traditional educational and leisure services balanced with the County's momentum for modern change."
This development of the Ponte Vedra Nocatee Regional Park and Nocatee Library is part of a broader county initiative to expand public spaces as St. Johns County’s population continues to rise. Serving as the last phase of this ambitious park plan, it follows three other crucial sites that have already broken ground: Silverleaf Sportsplex, Shearwater Community Park, and Greenbriar Park.
The Silverleaf Sportsplex is designed as a regional athletic facility supporting various sports and community activities, featuring multipurpose fields, a playground, and more, all amounting to an investment of $36 million. The Shearwater Community Park and Library, costing $12.3 million, will offer a blend of indoor and outdoor recreational amenities, including multipurpose rooms and pickleball courts, set to debut in early 2027.
Greenbriar Park, with a $23.8 million budget, will also serve as a community hub, complete with softball and baseball fields, a playground, and a library.
Anticipating the growth and engagement of the local community, Joy Andrews, County Administrator, summarized the importance of such investments: "Parks and libraries are at the heart of strong communities. These investments not only support the well-being of our residents but also establish the infrastructure necessary for families to connect, learn, and thrive."
