Celebrating National Pet Month with the Wahl® Dirty Dogs Contest
This May marks the 15th annual Wahl® Dirty Dogs Contest, a heartwarming initiative that coincides with National Pet Month. The contest aims to bring attention to the pressing issue of dog adoption, particularly for those shelter dogs who require a little extra love and care.
In collaboration with the global nonprofit organization, Greater Good Charities, Wahl intends to reward talented groomers and dedicated shelters for their pivotal roles in transforming the lives of these dogs. The journey of finding a forever home for many shelter dogs is often filled with obstacles, and the contributions of these groomers not only enhance a dog's appearance but significantly improve their chances of adoption. This year, the public has the opportunity to vote on who should be recognized as the Top 3 Shelter Dog Makeovers of 2026.
How to Participate
People can join in on the fun by visiting the official TikTok pages @WahlPets and @WahlAnimal to watch the transformation stories of each finalist. Voters can express their favorites by commenting #WahlDirtyDogsContest on their preferred videos. The voting period runs until the end of May, with prizes being awarded based on the total comments received for each entry:
- - First Prize: $5,000 for the shelter and $5,000 for the groomer
- - Second Prize: $2,000 for the shelter and $2,000 for the groomer
- - Third Prize: $1,000 for the shelter and $1,000 for the groomer
Meet the Finalists
Among the incredible transformations this year, three dogs have emerged as finalists. Here are their heartwarming stories:
Dominic
Dominic was brought to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter under tragic circumstances; his previous owner passed away, leaving him in a severely matted state. Fortunately, groomers Jasmina and Stephanie worked magic to reveal the gentle soul beneath the layers of tangled fur. Now, Dominic is looking and feeling brand new, ready to find a loving family.
Kailey
After being surrendered by the only family she ever knew, Kailey arrived at the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, literally trying to navigate life with her mouth tightly shut due to extreme matting. Groomer Patrice McCarron dedicated hours to delicately freeing Kailey from the physical and emotional burdens of neglect. Today, Kailey, free from pain, is a cherished member of a new family—her resilience is notable and inspiring.
Lucy
Lucy had a harrowing start, rescued from a crate where she had been left alone in freezing temperatures. Rushed to EASEL Animal Rescue League in Ewing Township, NJ, her recovery involved necessary medical treatments. Once she was stabilized, the team at Sosa's Spa Paws transformed her, removing years of neglect to showcase the beautiful dog she was meant to be. Now, Lucy enjoys the warmth of a loving home, surrounded by fellow pets and caring humans.
The Impact of Grooming
The Wahl Dirty Dogs Contest serves a larger purpose than just fun and pet pampering; it highlights how grooming can play a critical role in helping dogs find their forever homes. Many shelter pets do not receive essential grooming, posing a challenge in attracting potential adopters. For the last 15 years, Wahl has committed to donating grooming supplies, furthering their mission to uplift shelters across the country. With the inspiring Before and After transformations shared, pet lovers everywhere can witness the positive impact a simple grooming session can have.
