New Wellness Center at Utah State University
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary has launched a noteworthy initiative with the opening of the
Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center at Utah State University (USU). This center signifies a significant investment in the future of veterinary medicine and aims to enhance the mental health and well-being of veterinary students. Situated within the
College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), the center seeks to eliminate barriers that aspiring veterinarians often encounter, thereby supporting them from the very start of their educational journey.
Michael Bishop, the Director of Student Affairs for USU's CVM, emphasized the importance of integrating wellness into veterinary education. He stated, “The Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center represents our commitment to making well-being an integral part of veterinary education. We want our students to not only develop the knowledge and clinical skills to care for others, but also the habits, resources, and resilience needed to sustain themselves throughout a demanding and rewarding career in veterinary medicine.”
Supporting Mental Health
The
Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center provides students with personalized access to wellness specialists and promotes mindfulness practices. By facilitating one-on-one meetings with wellness experts, the center aims to ensure that self-care becomes as crucial to veterinary students as clinical skills. This initiative comes in response to increasing mental health challenges among veterinary professionals. Research shows that many veterinary students grapple with mental health issues; a concerning statistic revealed that
32% of first-year veterinary students experience clinical levels of depressive symptoms. Recognizing this crisis is vital for the profession's future.
Emily Cross, DVM, and Director of Veterinary Technical Communications at Purina, remarked, “Veterinary medicine is an incredibly rewarding profession, but we also recognize the demands associated with answering the call to care. By investing in the Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center, we want to cultivate an environment where future veterinarians have access to essential resources that promote their well-being.” This sentiment reflects a proactive step towards reshaping how veterinary education addresses mental health.
The Vision Behind the Center
The unveiling of the wellness center aligns with USU’s expansion of its four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, which began in August 2025 with its inaugural class. As part of this initiative, the program aims to instill skills, compassion, and a commitment to mental health in its graduates. With the
class of 2030 already on campus, the mission is clear: equip students for both the technical demands of veterinary work and the personal challenges they will undoubtedly face.
Supporting future veterinarians is a significant goal for Purina, reflected in its broader initiatives. Since the inception of the
Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission in 2024, the organization has contributed over
$3.5 million to various non-profit organizations that address challenges within the veterinary profession. These challenges include mental health support through collaborations with organizations like the
Veterinary Hope Foundation and financial assistance programs like the
American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) REACH Program™. Additionally, partnerships exist with initiatives aimed at improving access to expert care for various veterinary issues.
“Supporting the call to care must start before students even enter clinical practice,” said Cross. This philosophy drives Purina’s commitment to fostering resilience in the profession from its origins.
A Lasting Commitment
USU's CVM received its provisional accreditation from the
American Veterinary Medical Association in 2025, solidifying its role in developing skilled veterinary professionals equipped to serve communities in Utah and beyond. As the Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center opens its doors, it stands as a testament to the ideal that a focus on mental health is not just beneficial but necessary in advancing veterinary education and practice.
The mission continues at the
Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission, with a firm belief that nurturing future veterinarians during their formative years can lead to a healthier, more effective veterinary community. As Purina pursues its vision, the industry waits with hopeful anticipation for the positive impact this center will have on the well-being of future veterinary professionals.
