Pony.ai Achieves Landmark in Shenzhen with Fully Driverless Robotaxi Operations Launch

Pony.ai's Groundbreaking Step in Autonomous Mobility

Pony.ai, a frontrunner in the autonomous mobility sector, recently made headlines by securing Shenzhen's first citywide permit for fully driverless commercial robotaxi operations. This monumental achievement promises to revolutionize transportation in one of China's most innovative cities.

In collaboration with Shenzhen Xihu Corporation Limited, which is the city’s largest taxi operator, Pony.ai is set to implement fully autonomous robotaxis across key districts—Nanshan, Qianhai, and Baoan—with plans to extend services citywide. The permit signifies not just a local advancement, but a robust step into the future of urban travel, reflecting Shenzhen's reputation as 'China's Silicon Valley.'

Shenzhen spans close to 2,000 square kilometers and serves as the home for approximately 17.8 million residents, making it larger in population than New York City. The city's vibrant technology landscape is bolstered by major players like Tencent and BYD, facilitating a thriving ecosystem for innovation and development in autonomous transportation.

The partnership formed between Pony.ai and Xihu Group in June 2025 highlights a strategic alliance designed for success in the new mobility landscape. They plan to deploy over 1,000 of Pony.ai’s seventh-generation robotaxis in the near future, with the new permit paving the way for an aggressive rollout of these advanced vehicles.

Dr. James Peng, Founder and CEO of Pony.ai, expressed enthusiasm for this initiative. “The launch of this project marks the official implementation of Pony.ai's asset-light and AI-empowered commercialization model,” he stated. This innovative approach emphasizes core technology advancements while allowing traditional operators like Xihu to undergo intelligent transformations and share in the derived benefits.

Pony.ai’s deep commitment to technology is evident: the company has amassed over 55 million kilometers of autonomous testing globally, making them the only entity authorized to conduct fully driverless operations in all four of China’s Tier-1 cities—namely Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Currently, they operate a fleet of more than 720 robotaxis, a number that is expected to reach 1,000 by year’s end.

As urban areas across the globe look for smarter transportation solutions to accommodate growing populations and changing mobility needs, Pony.ai is setting a standard with this significant milestone. Their model not only integrates advanced AI technology but also taps into established taxi networks, exemplifying a collaborative approach to advance the industry while ensuring safety and efficiency in transit services.

Business insights predict that urban mobility will continue to evolve rapidly, making initiatives like Pony.ai’s pilot program in Shenzhen increasingly critical. The advancements in technology, combined with a supportive regulatory environment, are fostering an era where autonomous vehicles could soon dominate the roads, offering convenience and sustainability to millions of commuters.

The collaboration is designed to ensure safety and operational excellence, bringing together Xihu Group's extensive fleet management experience with Pony.ai's cutting-edge AI technology, thereby creating a sustainable framework for the future of transportation.

This development opens new avenues for mobility services around the world and positions Shenzhen as a model for future urban transportation projects globally. With the public eagerly anticipating their debut, smart city transportation solutions like Pony.ai's driverless robotaxis are expected to reshape how people navigate urban spaces.
