Creema SPRINGS Launches Fundraising for Kumamoto's Craft Revival After Earthquake

Creema SPRINGS Launches Support for Kumamoto's Artisan Community

In a heartfelt endeavor, Creema SPRINGS, Japan's leading crowdfunding platform dedicated to supporting creators, has announced the launch of a fundraising initiative aimed at assisting artisans affected by the devastating Kumamoto earthquake that struck on July 28, 2023. In collaboration with the Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Craft Association, this project seeks to provide vital support to workshops and businesses impacted by the disaster.

The earthquake, which registered a maximum seismic intensity of 7, inflicted significant damage on Kumamoto's rich artisan culture, characterized by exquisite pottery, metalwork, and woodworking. Creema has actively promoted the beauty and craftsmanship of Kumamoto through initiatives like the “Kumamoto Crafts Journey” and the “Made in Kumamoto Craft Contest” since 2019.

With the recent earthquake causing widespread destruction, including broken tools, damaged facilities, and fissures in the ground near workshops, many artisans now face immense challenges in continuing their craft. Recognizing the urgent need for support, Creema has worked closely with the Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Craft Association to assess the damage and identify the best way to provide assistance.

On August 28, marking one month since the disaster, Creema SPRINGS officially launched this fundraising project, targeting artisans in the central and southern parts of Kumamoto Prefecture, which were among the most severely impacted. The project page features updates on the conditions of the affected workshops and the importance of their crafts within the community.

Some artisans have indeed expressed a desire to forego assistance, believing that those with greater losses should receive priority. Nevertheless, the initiative is primarily focused on nine key workshops and businesses that suffered significant damage.

One of the most affected partners is the Den-Shichi Kiln, known for its Takada-yaki ceramics. They reported that about 90% of their products were destroyed, and the kiln and clay-storage pots were also damaged. Their inability to produce further products currently hampers their operations and impacts their livelihood.

Donations to support this noble cause will be accepted, starting at ¥1,000 (approximately $7). As this is a relief fund, there are no rewards offered in return. All proceeds, minus a 5% payment processing fee, will be equally distributed to the nine supporting businesses through the Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Craft Association. This initiative aims to ensure that affected artisans can return to their craft and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Kumamoto for future generations.

As Jyunpei Kanesashi, president of the Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Craft Association, noted, the region’s crafts carry a rich history built over generations. Despite challenges such as aging artisans and a decline in demand due to changing lifestyles, they have persevered through adversity over the years. Kanesashi expressed gratitude for any support that could help revive Kumamoto's crafts after such a significant setback.

Creema SPRINGS was born out of a mission to foster creativity and collaboration. Since its inception in June 2020, it has worked to bridge the gap between creative individuals and their supporters. With a vast network of over 310,000 creators and 21 million items listed on the Creema marketplace, it has become Japan’s largest handmade market.

In its fight to support the revival of Kumamoto’s artisanal community post-disaster, Creema SPRINGS proves that not only can creativity flourish even in times of hardship, but it can also unite communities for a greater cause. Together, through shared support and contribution, they hope to restore the beauty and craftsmanship of Kumamoto.
