RIFM's 60 Years of Commitment to Fragrance Safety Celebrated with Awards

Celebrating 60 Years of Fragrance Safety at RIFM

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) is marking a remarkable milestone this year—its 60th anniversary. Established in 1966, RIFM has been at the forefront of scientific analysis of fragrance materials, contributing to ensuring safety in the fragrance industry. As part of its anniversary celebrations, RIFM is excited to announce a special series of Trainee Awards, which will be presented during the highly anticipated Society of Toxicology (SOT) Annual Meeting and ToxExpo 2026.

This ceremony, designed to recognize the hard work and innovative contributions of outstanding early-career scientists, reflects RIFM’s continuous dedication to the future of fragrance safety. Across the three-day event, the award presentation will honor researchers whose work demonstrates critical advancements in toxicological science, aligning with the evolving landscape of safety assessments.

A Legacy of Safety and Innovation
RIFM President Dr. Anne Marie Api highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “Celebrating 60 years of RIFM means more than reflecting on our history; it is about investing in the future of fragrance safety.” This statement underlines the organization’s vision to not just celebrate what has been achieved but to cultivate the next generation of safety scientists who will continue to uphold RIFM’s mission.

Award Presentations
The award ceremonies will kick off on Monday, March 23rd, at the Marriott Marquis Marina. The first recipient of the Dermal Toxicology award will be Dr. Catalina Gaviria at 6:00 PM, presented by RIFM Principal Scientist Dr. Isabelle Lee.

On March 24th, the event will host a cornerstone evening featuring three concurrent awards. Dr. Nicole McNabb-Kelada will receive two awards, one for In Vitro and Alternative Methods, presented by Dr. Gretchen Ritacco, and another for Inhalation and Respiratory, presented by Dr. Nikaeta Sadekar. Additionally, the Risk Assessment award will be given to Mackenzie Allison by Dr. Kaushal Joshi that evening.

The final day, March 25th, will see the Immunotoxicology award presented to Valeria Bettinsoli by Dr. Chaitra Deodhar at 6 PM, also at the San Diego Ballroom A.

A Commitment to Animal-Free Methodologies
These awards not only celebrate individual successes but emphasize RIFM's ongoing legacy of collaboration within the scientific community. RIFM has long been an advocate for New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) that prioritize animal-free research methods in safety assessments. By recognizing the achievements of these talented scientists, RIFM aims to build a future where transparency and peer-reviewed research reinforce trust in the safe use of fragrance materials.

Looking Ahead
As the fragrance industry evolves, RIFM’s commitment to remaining a leader in safety assessments will be vital. The organization promises to continue supporting innovative scientists in their quests to address contemporary challenges in toxicological science. The Trainee Awards serve as a testament to the belief that fostering new talent will lead to groundbreaking advancements, ensuring that fragrance safety remains a priority in the years to come.
