New Coalition 'repro46' Unites Oklahomans for Reproductive Freedom Advocacy
Launch of repro46: A Movement for Reproductive Freedom in Oklahoma
In Oklahoma, a new organization named repro46 has been established to advocate for reproductive rights in the wake of the controversial abortion ban implemented in 2022. The initiative aims to educate citizens about the implications of these restrictions, correct misinformation, and foster a deeper understanding of how these policies affect personal health and family choices.
Janet Levit, an executive consultant with repro46, emphasized the organization's mission: "Every Oklahoman should have the freedom to make personal decisions that are best for our lives, our families, and our futures—free from political interference that threatens our health." This organization seeks to bridge divides among Oklahomans regarding political perspectives, emphasizing compassion and respect.
The Impact of Oklahoma's Abortion Ban
Since the initiation of the abortion ban, OBGYNs and other healthcare providers have experienced an exodus from the state due to threats of prosecution for delivering necessary care. This has left many patients, especially those facing high-risk pregnancies, in despair. As Dr. Jennifer Nelson, an experienced OBGYN and board member of repro46 shared, the current law generates fear among patients regarding essential healthcare, stating, "My patients are scared. They worry that if something goes wrong in a pregnancy, they might not be able to get emergency abortion care."
The repercussions extend beyond healthcare workers; data indicates that nearly 2,000 Oklahomans have traveled out of state for abortion services, further illustrating the law's impact on lives. Magon Hoffman, an Alaskan resident who has shared her personal journey, recounted an agonizing experience when her pregnancy was compromised. “Because of our laws, I was forced to flee out of state to get the care and compassion I was denied at home,” Hoffman recounted, showcasing the personal toll of legislation on individuals and their families.
Community Engagement and Education
As a sister organization to We Are Rising, repro46 recognizes the urgency of engaging statewide communities. They aim to host roundtable conversations and public awareness campaigns that invite participation from a diverse array of viewpoints and backgrounds. Amy McLaughlin Gray, the board president of repro46, further emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue. She noted, “When Oklahoma politicians banned abortion in 2022, we needed a space for honest, non-judgmental conversations about how this law impacts our health, families, and freedom.”
Through this initiative, repro46 stands ready to unite Oklahomans in conversation, understanding, and action towards the movement for reproductive freedoms. It welcomes participants from various faiths and beliefs, recognizing that reproductive health transcends political boundaries. The efforts of repro46 aim to build a state that respects individual choices regarding health and caregiving.
This newly founded organization hopes to pave the way for a more informed public discourse regarding reproductive rights and instigate thoughtful discussions on personal autonomy and care. By connecting with communities statewide, repro46 is poised to make a lasting impact in Oklahoma's battle for reproductive freedom.
