An Innovative Social Experiment at Harajuku Plaza: World with Subtitles

Responses from attendees have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing excitement about how such tools could enhance accessibility for both foreign visitors and those with hearing impairments. One visitor remarked, “It was surprising to see how much text is generated in daily life. With this app, both inbound tourists and the hearing impaired could enjoy going out even more.”

Opening Event Insights
The opening ceremony featured deaf actress Akiko Otonashi and Rihoko Kamizawa, a member of JPN Deaf Table Tennis who is set to compete in the 2025 Deaflympics. They discussed the challenges of a society that often takes hearing ability for granted.
The dialogue continued to touch upon various aspects of daily inconvenience associated with hearing loss. Ms. Otonashi emphasized the importance of having visual aids during emergencies to enhance accessibility.
With a strong message, the General Manager of Harakado, Rumi Koshiba, expressed, “We aim to change societal standards from here at Harakado. Our objective is to create a welcoming environment for everyone to spend time comfortably.”
As the event progresses, participants are encouraged to engage in conversations about their experiences, leading to a culmination event on May 18, where insights will be shared during a subtitled conference. This collective effort aims not only to introduce the YYSystem but also to provoke discussions about creating a more inclusive society.
