Global Focus on Professional and Technical Education at Tianjin Conference
This week, the World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference took place in Tianjin, Northern China, gathering nearly 1,000 participants from around the world. The conference, which ran from Wednesday to Friday, aimed to delve into critical topics such as the integration of educational practices with industry standards, sustainable development, teacher training, and lifelong learning.
Organized by the Ministry of Education of China, the National Commission of the People's Republic of China for UNESCO, and the municipal government of Tianjin, this year's conference focused on the role of vocational education as a vital engine for global innovation and sustainable growth.
Six pivotal initiatives were highlighted during the event, setting the framework for transforming vocational and technical education worldwide. These included a comprehensive forum with keynote speeches, ministerial round tables, and bilateral negotiations; the formation of a global alliance that unites vocational training institutions, industrial and educational organizations; the presentation of an international award recognizing excellence in vocational education; a skills competition featuring 42 disciplines; an exhibition showcasing achievements in vocational training, intangible cultural heritage, and international cooperation; and the launch of the World Vocational and Technical Education journal published by Tianjin University of Technology and Education.
In a video address, Stefania Giannini, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Education, asserted that vocational education serves as a catalyst for transformation. She referenced UNESCO's recent recommendation on education for peace, human rights, and sustainable development, which underscores technical education's pivotal role in fostering change. Giannini urged increased investments and innovation in vocational education as a means to address global challenges, emphasizing that skills are essential for navigating today’s complex world.
