HD Hyundai's Chung Kisun Explores Collaboration at US Naval Academy Visit
HD Hyundai's Chung Kisun Visits US Naval Academy
On March 7, 2025, Chung Kisun, the Executive Vice Chairman of HD Hyundai, made an important visit to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland. This visit underscores the growing partnership between South Korea and the United States in maritime innovation and education.
Chung's visit involved meetings with several high-ranking officials at the academy, including Vice Admiral Yvette M. Davids, the Superintendent, and Samara Firebaugh, the Academic Dean. Their discussions emphasized the academy's role as a leader in training future naval officers amid global security challenges.
During his tour, Chung attended a lecture on hull structure and visited a fluid dynamics laboratory, where he engaged with faculty members and midshipmen, exchanging insights on the future of maritime technologies and ongoing research challenges. He highlighted the importance of strengthening alliances, stating, “South Korea is a strong ally and a trusted partner of the United States. Together, we will drive innovation in the shipbuilding and maritime industry.”
Chung reflected on the longstanding partnership between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the US, mentioning that it has evolved into a comprehensive relationship that surpasses mere military cooperation. He articulated, “The ROK-US alliance was forged in sacrifice and has been strengthened over the decades. Today, it is more than a military partnership; it is a pillar of global security. As challenges evolve, so too must our cooperation.”
He also noted the advancements HD Hyundai has made in the areas of AI-based autonomous navigation and digital vessels, claiming that such technology positions the company as a world leader in shipbuilding. “We have successfully built five world-class Aegis destroyers, which we have delivered to the Navy, supporting innovation in national security,” he added.
The visit was also attended by Jung Ho-sub, a former Chief of Naval Operations of the ROK Navy, who echoed Chung's sentiments on the need for active collaboration with the US Navy. “Based on the world's leading shipbuilding technology, we can work jointly with the U.S. Navy to maintain global peace,” he stated.
Chung Kisun has been recognized for his commitment to supporting military personnel, including his recent gesture of sending special barbecue meals to Naval ROTC cadets in Korea during their winter training. His commitment extends beyond just support; he also engages in fostering the next generation of maritime leaders through educational initiatives. In July of the previous year, HD Hyundai signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Michigan and Seoul National University. This MOU aims to cultivate talent within the shipbuilding industry through educational cooperation, joint research, and internship opportunities.
As HD Hyundai continues to expand its presence in the maritime industry, all eyes are on the partnerships forming between Korea and the US, aiming for advancements that will serve both nations and contribute to global maritime security. In an era of rapid technological change, Chung's visit signifies a promising future for collaboration in the naval sector. The relationship between HD Hyundai and the US Naval Academy will likely yield beneficial outcomes for both parties as they navigate the challenges of today’s maritime landscape.
