Exploring the Flow and Accumulation in a Unique Art Exhibition at YUGEN Gallery

YUGEN Gallery's Art Exhibition: 'Beyond the Current'

Starting from August 1, 2026, until August 30, 2026, the YUGEN Gallery in Tokyo will host a unique exhibition titled 'Beyond the Current', featuring works by esteemed artists Yuri Kuramoto and Shoko Nakagawa. This exhibition dives deep into the themes of flow and sedimentation, seeking to reinterpret the rivers that connect our everyday lives with distant places.

The exhibition title, 'Beyond the Current', directs our attention to rivers as significant mediums bridging our daily existence with faraway realms. Historically, rivers have been depicted as life-giving arteries through myth and metaphor, representing the origins of civilization and trade, as well as the boundaries between life and death. However, this exhibition intends to focus on the river as an ordinary yet universal element in our environment, encouraging us to ponder its presence within our lives more thoughtfully.

Both Kuramoto and Nakagawa bring to the forefront their art rooted in the unique land of Hiroshima. Their works articulate landscapes and soundscapes that, while deeply connected to their immediate surroundings, carry an air of anonymity, suggesting that such experiences might exist just about anywhere in the world. By concentrating on these everyday yet overlooked materials, they offer a moment for us to reconsider how larger narratives and distant issues are profoundly embedded in our daily existence.

The exhibition is curated by Isao Yamamoto, an art professional based in Hiroshima, known for his insightful approach to contemporary art. This venture marks the third consecutive year of thematic exhibitions at YUGEN Gallery, following successful presentations in 2024 and 2025. It reveals a dedication to showcasing diverse artistic expressions that resonate with local cultural narratives while engaging audiences on a larger scale.

During the exhibition, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in artist talks and curator discussions, which will provide further insight into the exhibition's themes and the backgrounds of the artists. On August 1, 2026, and August 2, 2026, casual dialogue sessions will be hosted featuring both artists engaging in discussions regarding their works and perspectives on everyday life and landscapes. The curator will also host talks on August 15 and August 16, 2026, to delve deeper into the exhibition's vision and artworks.

Additionally, this exhibition is intricately linked with the MAFIN 2026 (Miyajima Art Festival in the Narrative 2026) initiative, occurring from November to December 2026 in Hiroshima and Miyajima. A restructured version of this exhibition will be presented during that festival, ensuring continuous engagement with the artists’ themes and messages.
