POINTek Unveils Innovative Multifunctional Athermal AWG Multiplexer for Enhanced Optical Network Efficiency

Transforming Optical Networks with Advanced Technology

In a major boost for optical network management, POINTek, Inc., renowned as a frontrunner in athermal arrayed waveguide gratings (AAWGs) and specialized optical module packaging, has officially announced the launch of its Multifunctional AAWG brick. This cutting-edge device remarkably simplifies the integration of various essential services—such as Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA), and Monitoring channels—directly into Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) fiber lines. The latest AAWG bricks promise to deliver highly efficient solutions that minimize infrastructure costs by integrating these services in a modular fashion.

POINTek's innovative AAWG brick features four built-in functional access ports—dedicated to 1620nm OTDR, EDFA IN, EDFA OUT, and a monitoring channel at 298nm. This innovative design eliminates the need for costly alterations to fiber lines after installation, drastically reducing post-installation expenses.

"This new multifunctional AAWG brick effectively streamlines the installation of additional services into existing fiber network lines without needing extensive redesign or modification to the fiber infrastructure," said Dr. T.H. Rhee, CEO of POINTek. This forward-looking approach allows operators to add necessary equipment, such as the OTDR, by simply connecting it to designated access ports, facilitating seamless network management.

Moreover, the multifunctional AAWG brick’s design prevents interference with primary traffic signal frequencies, reinforcing operational integrity. In situations where the EDFA application is not required, users can utilize a simple loop-back jumper cord to maintain traffic flow without disruption. "Thus, this device stands as an efficient and cost-effective solution for diverse applications," adds Dr. Rhee.

Since 2018, POINTek has broadened its AAWG applications beyond traditional DWDM setups to include Outside Plant (OSP) functionalities, particularly in the 5G Wireless fronthaul sector. "We take pride in being at the forefront of technology adoption in the marketplace, pushing the limits of conventional applications into new realms," remarked Dr. Donald Yu, CMO of POINTek. With a seasoned history of introducing groundbreaking AAWGs to meet the evolving demands of new technologies, POINTek continues to shift its focus not only towards telecommunications but also into areas concerning Data Center technology, Aerospace, and AI/Silicon Photonics.

To cater to these expanding domains, POINTek's product suite now includes modified AWGs adaptable for Data Centers, like the Ultra Low Loss and Low Profile AWGs, alongside restructured AWGs for aerospace applications and AI photonics. These innovative products, featuring the latest Fiber Arrays tailored for AI/Silicon Photonics, demonstrate POINTek’s commitment to optimizing performance by utilizing ultra-short optical fiber protrusion lengths, thereby maximizing wafer yields for Photonics ICs.

Dr. Yu emphasized the role of ingenuity in meeting specific customer applications and satisfaction. "We continuously advance our optical packaging solutions to align with emergent market trends," he stated, reaffirming POINTek's commitment to quality and innovation.

The Multifunctional Athermal AWG Multiplexer, alongside other newly developed AAWG modules aimed at optimizing function in Data Center, Aerospace, and AI/Silicon Photonics applications, will soon be showcased at the OFC2025 Exposition in San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center from April 1-3, 2025.

As POINTek continues to shape the optical technology landscape, it remains dedicated to fulfilling the demands of its diverse clientele—ensuring operational excellence and paving the way for future advancements in network management.
