The 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize: Champions of Global Change

On April 11, 2025, the Crystal Ballroom of Lotte Hotel World in Seoul became a vibrant hub of inspiration and dedication as the Sunhak Peace Prize Ceremony took place, celebrating a significant milestone: its 10th anniversary. The event attracted over 750 international guests, including influential global leaders, former heads of state, and representatives from civil society, all united in the spirit of recognizing extraordinary commitment to peace and development.

Honoring Visionary Leaders

This year’s ceremony spotlighted three remarkable leaders who have made substantial contributions to environmental sustainability, global citizenship, and educational innovation.

Wanjira Mathai: Advocate for Environmental Sustainability

One of the laureates, Wanjira Mathai from Kenya, was rewarded for her exceptional work in environmental leadership. As a prominent figure in the AFR100 initiative and the Green Belt Movement, her efforts to restore the environment have resulted in the planting of over 51 million trees across Africa, a powerful testament to her dedication to combating deforestation and promoting ecological balance.

Hugh Evans: A Global Citizen

Hugh Evans, hailing from Australia and co-founder along with CEO of Global Citizen, also received the prestigious award. Through his innovative campaigns, Evans has mobilized more than $43 billion, directly affecting the lives of over 1.3 billion individuals globally. His mission focuses on poverty alleviation, education improvement, health advancements, and ensuring access to essential services, leaving a profound impact in numerous communities.

Patrick Awuah Jr.: Transforming Higher Education

The ceremony also honored Patrick Awuah Jr., the founder of Ashesi University in Ghana, for his transformative impact on African higher education. Awuah’s visionary leadership has implemented forward-thinking curricula centered on ethics, gender equality, critical thinking, and leadership. Under his guidance, Ashesi has emerged as a leading institution, shaping graduates who are prepared to drive social change across the continent and beyond.

Special Recognitions

The ceremony also featured the Founders' Award, given to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his role in promoting peaceful democratic transitions and good governance. Alongside him, Samuel Radebe from South Africa was recognized for his efforts in fostering interreligious harmony and community peace throughout Africa. Although the awarding of Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, his contributions were acknowledged.
