Hitachi Systems Revamps Container Data Center Offerings
Hitachi Systems has announced the renewal of its lineup of container data centers, introducing three new standard models designed to meet the increasing demand for generative AI applications. The enhancement of these container data centers aims to deliver a complete package that includes server racks, cooling systems, and power supply configurations, all in a compact unit. This effectively reduces setup time and cost significantly compared to traditional data centers while allowing for easier expansion and relocation.
The three newly introduced models cater to diverse requirements: the
High-Load Server Model for intensive generative AI operations, the
Server Room Model for dedicated environments, and the
Edge Computing Model for carrier base stations. By implementing these models, customers can swiftly establish data center environments tailored to their specific needs, facilitating quick business expansion, especially in the realm of generative AI.
Background
Recognizing data centers as a critical business focus, the Hitachi Group aims to support the establishment of green data centers by employing a management system that encompasses renewable energy generation, transmission, storage technologies, energy management, cooling systems, and a comprehensive range of IT infrastructure and services. With extensive experience in modular data centers, Hitachi Systems offers portable container models while Hitachi Ltd. provides larger, more flexible versions, collectively addressing a wide array of customer requirements. The firm has garnered a robust track record both domestically and internationally.
In light of the rising global demand for AI and the expansion of telecommunication infrastructures, there is a surging need for data centers. However, the construction and transportation industries in Japan are experiencing worker shortages, extending the timeline for the construction of conventional data centers, thereby putting spotlight on container data centers as a solution.
Features of the Service
Container data centers condense all necessary equipment, such as IT devices, power supplies, and air conditioning, into a singular, compact container. Benefiting from Hitachi Systems' expertise in IT services and construction, the containers are designed and built to maximize the performance and specifications of IT equipment. This design efficiently manages the heat output of high-performance systems like GPU servers, ensuring stable operation.
The three new standard models include the following:
1.
High-Load Server Model
-
Use Case: Optimized for high-load servers used in generative AI.
-
Features: Water cooling with direct chip cooling technology and infrastructure tailored for extensive IT loads.
-
Specifications: 40ft container, 20 racks, 800kW IT load priced around JPY 1 billion.
2.
Dedicated Environment Server Room Model
-
Use Case: Designed for research institutions, hospitals, and plants to install server rooms on-site.
-
Features: AWS, robust networking, and individual security requirements catered to.
-
Specifications: 36ft container, 8 racks, 100kW IT load priced around JPY 250 million.
3.
Base Station - Edge Computing Model
-
Use Case: Ideal for telecommunications networks.
-
Features: Provides direct current power supply systems for communication devices.
-
Specifications: 20ft container, 4 racks, 25kW IT load priced around JPY 100 million.
These models address various operational needs efficiently, allowing for rapid deployment and reduced costs. They can fit even in constrained spaces, addressing the needs of sectors requiring high data confidentiality, such as hospitals and research facilities.
Additionally, each container comes equipped with a hybrid service drone,
uGO, which performs autonomous inspections of the data centers, allowing operators to monitor the conditions and troubleshoot issues remotely. This innovation significantly aids in dealing with worker shortages by enabling operations without the need for constant human presence.
Future Initiatives
Hitachi Systems is poised to drive the sales of these new container data center models, aiming for a cumulative revenue of JPY 10 billion by the fiscal year 2027. The company plans to align its managed service offerings with these data centers for comprehensive security monitoring and operational support.
Furthermore, maintenance services will be promptly provided by nearly 300 personnel across the nation, ensuring continued support post-installation. In collaboration with Hitachi Ltd., Hitachi Systems will further enhance data center operations while striving towards sustainable practices for a greener future, directly contributing to customers' digital transformation initiatives and a sustainable society.
