Populous Expands Aviation Design with New Leadership
Populous, the renowned global design firm, has made a strategic move by appointing Nikolas Dando-Haenisch as the Principal and Head of Aviation for the Eastern United States. This decision underscores Populous's commitment to elevating its aviation design practice, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the industry. Dando-Haenisch brings along over 20 years of experience in leading extensive aviation and transportation projects both domestically and internationally, marking a significant enhancement to the firm's capabilities in the aviation sector.
In his new role, Nikolas will be responsible for directing the design of aviation projects, working hand-in-hand with other senior leaders in the practice. He will collaborate closely with Tom Theobald, the Global Head of Aviation, and Corey Ochsner, who leads the aviation team in the Western U.S., to cultivate and strengthen Populous's aviation offerings across the Americas. Based out of the firm’s New York office, Dando-Haenisch aims to foster growth while also guiding complex airport projects, an area where he has already established a remarkable track record.
Jonathan Mallie, Global Director and Managing Director of the Americas at Populous, expressed enthusiasm about Dando-Haenisch's arrival, highlighting his in-depth expertise in designing large-scale airport facilities. “Nikolas's background in managing critically complex transportation projects will undoubtedly enhance our already robust aviation design process,” Mallie stated. “We anticipate that his leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future of passenger experiences.”
Dando-Haenisch's impressive portfolio speaks volumes about his capability. His past projects include award-winning designs for Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal A, substantial enhancements for the LA Airport Metro Connector, and the transformative development of both New York Penn Station and DC Union Station. Such milestones in his career not only reflect his design prowess but also his ability to balance functionality and user experience in high-stakes environments.
Regarding his new position, Dando-Haenisch remarked, “Joining Populous is an exciting opportunity to lead a team that is committed to redefining what aviation design can achieve through a people-first approach.” He expressed eagerness to contribute innovative, experience-focused designs that will transform aviation spaces into welcoming environments for travelers.
Before joining Populous, he spent more than two decades at Grimshaw, an architectural firm known for its distinctive and functional designs. His academics include a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. This combination of formal education and practical experience positions him uniquely to lead complex design teams and projects.
