Autonomous Freight Transport in Japan
In a significant step forward for logistics in Japan, Japan Post Co., Ltd. has announced a partnership with T2 Co., Ltd. to commence regular freight services using autonomous trucks. This initiative aims to utilize automated driving technology to address the ongoing shortage of truck drivers in Japan. Starting from January 26, 2026, the new regular freight route will operate between the Kanagawa West Post Office and the New Osaka Post Office, covering an impressive distance of approximately 460 kilometers.
Japan Post has been collaborating with T2 since July 2025, utilizing T2’s Level 2 autonomous trucks for commercial operations. This involved joint efforts with Seino Transportation Co., Ltd., which allowed them to transport mixed cargo using these automated vehicles. The upcoming autonomous freight route represents a significant expansion of these efforts and is particularly noteworthy for its emphasis on sustainability.
The newly established route will follow a path along the Tomei Expressway and the Meishin Expressway, where approximately 435 kilometers will be covered under Level 2 autonomous driving conditions. These drivers will still maintain oversight, especially in environments requiring human intervention, like toll booths and construction zones, to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
One of the striking features of this regular freight service is its commitment to environmental sustainability. Japan Post plans to use renewable diesel fuel, which is considered a next-generation alternative that can potentially result in up to 100% reduction of CO₂ emissions. ITOCHU ENEX Co., Ltd., will supply this renewable diesel for the trial runs, while considerations to use B5 diesel – a low-carbon fuel blended with biodiesel – are on the table as well. These fuel sourcing efforts highlight an important commitment to reducing carbon footprints in logistics transport.

The companies are aiming not only to streamline logistics but also to contribute positively to environmental initiatives.
Looking to the future, T2 is targeting the launch of Level 4 autonomous trucks for freight transportation services by fiscal year 2027. Japan Post plans to use data and results gathered from these commercial operations to explore the potential for integrating Level 4 autonomous trucks into their logistics network fully.
As both companies navigate through this innovative frontier, their partnership signifies an essential step in reshaping Japan’s transportation landscape, showcasing how technology can meet practical needs while fostering sustainability. This initiative not only presents an opportunity for operational efficiency but also symbolizes a commitment to a greener future in freight transport.
With Japan Post's historical background in logistics and T2's pioneering efforts in autonomous technology, this collaboration marks a defining moment in the transportation industry, paving the way for smarter and cleaner logistics solutions.
