Portable Power Supply FAQ Released Amid Rising Lithium Battery Fires
Understanding the Surge of Lithium Ion Battery Fires
In recent times, there has been a significant increase in fire incidents related to lithium-ion batteries across Japan. In Tokyo alone, the reported cases had already reached 228 by September 2025, which marks an increase of 52 cases compared to the previous year. This troubling trend has raised concerns especially since over 30% of these incidents involved mobile battery chargers. A notable incident occurred in July 2025 in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, when a fire broke out at a public facility due to portable power supplies charging during a tsunami warning. This underlines the higher-than-anticipated risks associated with backup battery operations during crisis situations.
