Innovative Work-Life Crafting Training Receives Excellence Award at Conference
Introduction
The Work-Life Crafting (WLC) training program, developed through collaboration between Pasona Safety Net and the University of Tokyo, was recently recognized with an Excellence Award at the 33rd Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Occupational Mental Health. This accolade underscores the program's effectiveness in enhancing well-being and reducing psychological stress among workers.
Overview of the Research
The study was conducted by Pasona Safety Net (headquartered in Tokyo), led by Tatsuya Shinmura, alongside the Digital Mental Health (DMH) Social Collaboration Course at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Medicine. The core principle of WLC revolves around empowering individuals to actively harmonize work and life through incremental adjustments in their daily routines.
The Award Presentation
At the conference, the presented paper, titled "Effects of the Work-Life Crafting Training Program Targeted at Female Workers: A Single-Group Pre-Post Comparison Study," showcased the positive outcomes of the training on the well-being of participants. Notably, 41 female workers participated in two training sessions, demonstrating a significant improvement in their well-being as measured by WHO-5 and a reduction in psychological stress responses assessed by BJSQ. These results indicate that the WLC program effectively contributes to maintaining and enhancing mental health in the workplace.
What is Work-Life Crafting?
WLC is a novel framework developed by Dr. Asuka Sakuratani, an Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo. It builds on concepts from job crafting and existing research on work-life balance. Pasona Safety Net, in collaboration with the university, has focused on developing effective training programs based on this theory. WLC encourages individuals to examine both work and personal life reflectively, crafting their experiences to achieve a harmonious balance and significantly improve their well-being.
Methodology and Implementation
The WLC training program aims to foster small, manageable behavioral changes in areas such as work procedures, lifestyle adjustments, and relationship management. By encouraging incremental actions within everyday life, the program aims to create a positive cycle between work and personal life, thereby enhancing psychological health and job satisfaction. Additionally, it incorporates concepts like "spillover," where work and personal life influence one another, and "crossover," which reflects how one’s mental state and behavior impact family and colleagues.
Collaborative Research and Development
Pasona Safety Net has dedicated itself to mental health support for employees and organizations through various initiatives, including counseling and workplace environment enhancements. The University of Tokyo provides scientific expertise related to mental health and occupational health. By combining scientific evidence with practical workplace applications, this collaboration aims to develop new mental health support services that enhance the well-being of working individuals.
Future Outlook
In light of the accolades received, Pasona Safety Net plans to continue accumulating evidence regarding the WLC training program and plans to expand its practical applications in various corporate settings to facilitate well-being and work-life harmony. Initiatives to promote health management, enhance job satisfaction, and align life events with career continuity will help improve well-being for both workers and companies.
Acknowledgments
This award could not have been accomplished without the guidance of Professor Asuka Sakuratani and her colleagues at the University of Tokyo, as well as the cooperation from participating enterprises. Pasona Safety Net looks forward to further advancing mental health support based on scientific evidence through continued collaboration with the University. Together, they strive to build a society where individuals can thrive both physically and mentally in their work environments.
Through the WLC approach, the next step in achieving a balanced work-life paradigm is underway, solidifying it as an essential strategy for modern workplaces.
