Podium Education Expands Career Discovery to Combat Student Attrition in College
Addressing College Dropout Rates: The Expansion of Career Discovery
In a landscape where one in three college students are contemplating leaving their institutions, Podium Education has stepped up its efforts with the expansion of its innovative Career Discovery program to ten universities this fall. The initiative is tailored for first-year and exploratory students, aiming to equip them with early exposure to real-life industry scenarios and challenges in collaboration with notable organizations such as L'Oréal, Crocs, and IDEO.
This program not only offers academic credit but also includes guided reflections that encourage students to recognize their strengths and interests. This is crucial in helping them define their degree paths and foster a sense of purpose and belonging within the academic community.
Originally piloted in the spring of 2026 at eight universities—Appalachian State University, Cleveland State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Kent State University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, Michigan State University, Southern Methodist University, and The University of Texas at San Antonio—the program has shown promising results. This academic year, the Career Discovery initiative has added cohorts at Boston University and Florida International University (FIU). Significantly, many campuses filled their course sections within hours of registration, highlighting the high student demand for career-focused education.
According to recent data, only 34% of incoming students at U.S. public colleges graduate within four years. The first year in college has been identified as the critical period for student attrition. As higher education institutions face demographic shifts and increasing scrutiny about the return on investment in degrees, revamping the first-year experience emerges as a pivotal strategy to improve student retention rates.
Research indicates that a strong sense of purpose and belonging is especially vital during the first year, as it plays a significant role in helping students stay on track toward completing their degrees. The Lumina Foundation-Gallup's State of Higher Education 2026 study reported that one in three students had considered dropping out in the previous six months, and 21% attributed this to a lack of belonging. Notably, career prospects emerged as the strongest motivator for students to enroll and remain in college.
High-impact practices such as internships, faculty-led research, and capstone projects enhance retention, boost student confidence, and prepare them for future careers, but these opportunities often arrive too late or are available to too few students. Independent studies from the University of California, Irvine, revealed that students from Arizona State University participating in Podium's high-impact learning initiatives retained at rates up to ten percentage points higher than their peers.
The Career Discovery program is designed to intentionally integrate exploration into the first-year experience. Feedback from the initial pilot revealed a more than 100% increase in students' clarity about their strengths and interests; 80% reported elevated career confidence, and intent to persist in college surged by 15 percentage points.
Podium Education connects students with over 70 industry employers, enabling them to engage in authentic problem-solving projects. This program includes weekly live sessions where students interact with industry professionals and collaborate with peers from various academic backgrounds—a framework aligned with academic oversight.
Training students to identify their interests and translating these into viable career paths and majors is essential. Nzingha Williams, a Lead Talent and Performance Management Consultant at Wells Fargo, emphasized the importance of fostering exploration early in students' college careers to prepare them for future opportunities.
Heather Shipley, Senior Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio, praised Career Discovery for facilitating the crucial link between academic experiences and career pathways. The program aligns with APLU's recognition of the university’s commitment to experiential learning excellence.
