Nordic Semiconductor Expands nRF54L Series with Cost-effective Bluetooth LE SoCs
Expanding nRF54L Series: New Entry-Level SoCs
Nordic Semiconductor, a frontrunner in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has recently introduced two exciting additions to the nRF54L series: the nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B. These new System-on-Chip (SoC) models are designed to cater to a spectrum of applications while maintaining an economical approach to Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) technology.
Key Features of nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B
Both the nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B are engineered with crucial attributes that define the nRF54L series, emphasizing robust Bluetooth LE connectivity, ultra-low power consumption, and user-friendly software. They particularly excel in developing straightforward, cost-effective Bluetooth LE end products, making them ideal for basic applications like sensors, tags, remote controls, and computer peripherals.
Øyvind Strøm, Nordic Semiconductor's VP of Marketing for Short-Range, expressed that these new SoCs provide developers with a straightforward and secure starting point for their projects. He emphasizes that by incorporating fundamental features of their standard Bluetooth LE SoCs alongside an easy-to-use software ecosystem, developers can better align their products with cost-sensitive market demands.
Leveraging Nordic's Comprehensive Bluetooth Offering
The introduction of these entry-level SoCs ensures that developers can benefit from the same feature-rich, certified Bluetooth LE stack that has been a hallmark of Nordic's offerings. With extensive reusable certification applied across the entire nRF54L series, users can expect reliable, high-performance Bluetooth LE communication that guarantees interoperability. Nordic's longstanding commitment to the Bluetooth standard further reassures thousands of developers worldwide.
Developers gain access to the full development ecosystem provided by Nordic, complete with powerful software and tools such as the nRF Connect SDK. This extensive documentation and hands-on online training facilitate faster development and shorter time-to-market timelines. Additionally, Nordic's nRF Cloud services pave the way for secure and scalable firmware updates and device management capabilities, from the chip to the cloud, enhancing the overall value proposition of the nRF Connect SDK.
Technical Specifications
The nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B integrate simple memory and peripheral options, offering a solid and efficient foundation for product development. Both SoCs are powered by an Arm Cortex-M33 processor running at 128 MHz, coupled with low-leakage RAM for efficient, responsive processing in ultra-low-power wireless systems. Incorporating fourth-generation Nordic Bluetooth radio technology, they also feature essential security functions and pin-to-pin compatibility with various SoCs in the series for easy scalability.
The nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B each come with different memory specifications; while both have 0.5 MB of Non-Volatile Memory (NVM), the nRF54LS05B is equipped with 96 KB of RAM, compared to the 64 KB found in the nRF54LS05A. This variance allows developers to cater to applications with different memory needs seamlessly.
Compatibility and Integration
Part of a next-generation, multi-protocol series, the nRF54L series supports various wireless protocols including Bluetooth LE, Matter, Thread, and Zigbee, alongside 2.4 GHz modes. Thanks to scalable memory options and complete analog/digital interfaces paired with advanced security, the nRF54L series is tailored for creating a wide range of products on a single chip.
Availability
Currently, the nRF54LS05A and nRF54LS05B SoCs are available for evaluation purposes and for project development, with production set to commence in Q3 of 2026. For early access programs, including development kits and samples, developers are encouraged to connect with the Nordic sales team.
