Santa Clara Family Health Plan Enhances Health Coverage Access Through Local Partnerships

Santa Clara Family Health Plan Expands Access to Health Coverage

In a proactive step to navigate upcoming changes in health policy, the Santa Clara Family Health Plan (SCFHP) has launched a partnership initiative to aid community members in accessing Medi-Cal. This collaboration, involving various community-based organizations within Santa Clara County, targets residents who may face challenges enrolling or maintaining their health coverage due to impending regulations set to take effect in 2026.

As the deadline approaches, SCFHP is keenly aware of the importance of encouraging continued enrollment in Medi-Cal, particularly for populations vulnerable to changes in coverage eligibility. The program aims to reassure residents not only that the health plan remains available to all Californians regardless of immigration status until the end of this year, but also that support systems are in place to assist them during this crucial period.

"Santa Clara Family Health Plan is dedicated to ensuring that our community remains supported throughout this transition," said Christine M. Tomcala, CEO of SCFHP. "We are committed to providing every resident with the information and assistance they need to navigate the enrollment and renewal processes."

To facilitate this, SCFHP is increasing operating hours at key community resource centers, including the Blanca Alvarado Community Resource Center in East San José and the South County Service Hub in Gilroy. This adjustment allows for increased accessibility to one-on-one assistance and language support, ensuring that all residents grasp the steps required for enrollment or renewal confidently.

Beginning January 1, 2026, significant changes will impact Medi-Cal eligibility, particularly for adults with Unsatisfactory Immigration Status (UIS). While children under 18 and pregnant individuals will continue to have access to Medi-Cal regardless of their immigration status, new enrollments for adults over 19 will be paused. It is crucial for current Medi-Cal members to remain vigilant with their renewal processes to ensure they retain their coverage.

In response to these upcoming changes, the SCFHP Governing Board has mandated that resources be allocated extensively to assist those eligible for Medi-Cal coverage in completing the enrollment process. This collaborative effort includes partnerships with trusted local organizations such as Amigos de Guadalupe, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, and multiple others dedicated to serving the community's health care needs.

"The dual objectives of this initiative are vital — ensuring that existing Medi-Cal members receive necessary support for document redetermination while also allowing individuals with peculiar immigration statuses to enroll before the cut-off date," stated Brian Darrow, Chair of the SCFHP Governing Board.

For over two decades, SCFHP has been dedicated to breaking down barriers to accessing comprehensive health care in Santa Clara County. With a commitment to over 295,000 members, its goal remains clear: to provide equitable health coverage and improved health outcomes for all community members.

As changes to the Medi-Cal landscape continue to unfold, SCFHP is steadfast in its mission to empower members with the guidance and assistance needed to navigate these transitions confidently. They are ensuring that every member is equipped to remain connected to essential health care services today and in the future.

For those in Santa Clara County, the message is clear: support is readily available, and SCFHP stands ready to assist every step of the way. For more details about SCFHP and the services it offers, visit www.scfhp.com.
