Dive into the Outdoors at HAPPY OUTSIDE BEAMS YAKUSHIMA
This August, BEAMS will introduce its first experiential base, the
HAPPY OUTSIDE BEAMS YAKUSHIMA POP UP SHOP, from
August 8 to October 12, 2026, located on the stunning UNESCO World Heritage site of Yakushima. This pop-up shop is designed to promote the joys of outdoor adventure, expanding its reach beyond just web media and events to create a tangible experience for visitors.
The concept of the shop—"Starting Outdoor Fun in Yakushima"—encapsulates the essence of enjoying the natural landscapes that surround it. Unlike traditional retail spaces, this shop aims to provide an immersive experience allowing guests to not only watch but actively participate in exploring and understanding Yakushima.
Guests can engage with nature through various senses, fostering conversations with locals and making new discoveries. This shop is a place to savor the essence of Yakushima and deepen visitors' bond with the island.
Unique Offerings
Inside the shop, exclusive apparel and goods, including collaborations with local businesses, will be available for purchase. Visitors can also create their own
custom T-shirts and pouches that capture the day's unique conditions—like temperature and weather—through heat-pressed designs, allowing them to take home a personalized souvenir of their adventure. Furthermore, guests can use local ingredients to craft their own original spices, giving them a taste of Yakushima to remember.
In addition to these permanent experiences, the shop will host
weekly workshops in collaboration with local entrepreneurs. These workshops will cover a variety of topics including marine plastic upcycling, Yakusugi (Japanese cedar) crafts, aromatherapy, and bamboo crafting, providing opportunities to connect with the island's culture and natural heritage.
Guided Tours and Insider Tips
To further enhance the experience, the shop will work alongside certified local guides known as
Yakushima Messengers to offer guided tours, showcasing the island's attractions and hidden gems that conventional tourist guides might overlook. The store staff will also share their recommended activities and must-see spots, enriching the visitor experience beyond the commercial aspect of the pop-up shop.
The building housing the pop-up shop, known as
Yakushima Messenger, is designed by architect
Yasuhiro Horibe. This community hub employs regional materials such as local stone and wood, blending seamlessly into the island’s stunning landscapes, adding another layer of appeal to this project.
Additionally, a café named
pup, which specializes in drinks made from local ingredients, will operate on-site. This venue will serve as a space to explore Yakushima's food culture, providing guests an opportunity to appreciate the island through its culinary offerings.
Ultimately, the HAPPY OUTSIDE BEAMS YAKUSHIMA POP UP SHOP aims to be more than a simple retail space. It strives to become a
base for outdoor activities, connecting visitors with the island’s natural beauty, local residents, guides, and creative minds alike.
