As the world celebrates World Water Day on March 22, focused on glacier preservation, Beko reaffirms its commitment to the urgent need to conserve water globally for future generations. The company is highlighting the significant financial and environmental impacts that water and energy savings can have on households. With a profound acknowledgment of water's essential role in the functionality of home appliances, Beko demonstrates its dedication to water efficiency through innovative technologies and sustainable practices.
Water conservation offers substantial advantages for both the environment and household budgets. Thanks to advancements in technology, modern appliances now use considerably less water compared to older models. For instance, in Europe, washing machines consumed more than 65 liters per cycle at the end of the 1990s, but by 2022, that figure had dropped dramatically to around 46 liters. Similarly, dishwashers that once required approximately 20 liters per cycle now use less than 10 liters. These improvements provide consumers with an efficient way to lower their ecological footprint while also reducing utility costs.
The connection between melting glaciers and the water that flows into our homes is more direct than many realize, says Hakan Bulgurlu, CEO of Beko. Every drop of water saved in households around the globe contributes to the collective effort to combat the growing water scarcity exacerbated by climate change-induced glacier retreat. The rapid melting of glaciers serves as a stark reminder of our planet's interdependence. As glaciers continue to shrink, the decisions we make to save water at home become all the more important, adds Bulgurlu. Through our innovations and commitments, we aim to ensure that future generations have access to this vital resource.
Innovative Solutions for Responsible Water Consumption at Home
Beko's continuous investment in water-saving technologies produces measurable results for consumers. The company's water-efficient appliances are designed to deliver exceptional performance while significantly reducing water and energy consumption. For instance, Beko's SaveWater dishwasher utilizes only 6.9 liters of water per full load. This innovative feature saves the rinse water from the final washing stage, hygienically storing it in a designated reservoir for reuse at the start of the next wash cycle, enabling households to save 2.6 liters of water with every Eco program cycle.
When coupled with compatible Beko washing machines, the SaveWater dryer collects up to 5.2 liters of water during the drying cycle and directs it into the washing machine for use in the next wash. The AI-powered dishwasher automatically identifies the optimal settings for each load. Its SensorAdapt technology detects the soil level and load volume, automatically selecting the best washing cycle to ensure optimal results while saving up to 50% in energy, water, and time, all while guaranteeing outstanding dish cleanliness effortlessly.
Beko’s AutoDose washing machines utilize smart sensors to precisely measure the load, fabric type, and degree of soil for optimized detergent usage and reduced water consumption. This advanced algorithm can decrease water usage by 25%, effectively lowering water consumption during the rinse phase via optimal dosing.
Beko's approach extends beyond creating innovative products; it encompasses its entire operational footprint. The company aims to reduce water intake in manufacturing by 25% by 2040, compared to its 2024 baseline year. During the same period, it also plans to increase its water recycling and reuse rate to 35% across all production facilities.
Climate Action
Aligned with its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Beko recognizes that protecting water resources is inextricably linked to combating climate change. Its short-term objectives include a 42% reduction in absolute emissions in Scope 1 and 2 as well as Scope 3 emissions related to product use by 2030, compared to 2022 levels. Long-term, Beko is committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90% and its Scope 3 emissions by 90% by 2050, relative to 2022 benchmarks. These goals are aligned with the 1.5°C climate scenario and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to renewable energy are essential to preserving glaciers, which is why we strive for 100% green electricity in our production by 2030 and have already made excellent progress, states Hakan Bulgurlu.
