OCIANA® has recently announced the successful conclusion of a significant phase of Operational Validation Testing (OVT) as part of its unified digital platform aimed at revolutionizing port call optimization. This platform is designed to facilitate real-time collaboration among shipping lines and port authorities, thereby enhancing global supply chain efficiency while simultaneously reducing emissions caused by maritime transport and fuel consumption.
The ongoing validation tests involve project partners working together with their operational priorities in mind, allowing the platform to evolve according to real-world requirements. Initial results indicate that both ship operators and port authorities can utilize a singular system to share real-time data and streamline processes, moving away from fragmented communications commonly conducted via email, telephone, and spreadsheets. As this initiative develops, it aims to lay the groundwork for just-in-time (JIT) arrivals and a more sustainable maritime transport system.
Richard Kolacz, CEO of OCIANA®, stated, "In collaboration with the Technology Leadership Program of Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, OCIANA® has created a platform that allows for real-time information exchange among various port stakeholders. This validation marks an important milestone in providing carriers and port operators with a unified platform that seamlessly integrates with their existing systems. We plan to continue developing it with our partners, leveraging their operational feedback to ensure timely arrivals while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions from maritime transport."
The project has brought together OCIANA®'s technological experts alongside Canada Steamship Lines (CSL), the Port of Montreal, Saint Lawrence Pilots Administration, and Clear Seas to enhance core planning abilities. Utilizing proven capabilities from daily operations, OCIANA® Ports provides port stakeholders with a centralized command center for dock planning. All reservation requests, pre-arrival notifications, and modification requests are centralized, enabling quicker, more informed decision-making. Real-time dashboards and configurable alerts promptly notify involved parties of any discrepancies in expected arrival times and rescheduled activities, thereby preempting potential issues.
Currently being developed, the OCIANA® Ships training interface will offer carriers a streamlined workflow for every planning action, featuring guided forms for initial requests and modifications to reduce training time and minimize errors. Real-time tracking and automated alerts will replace manual follow-ups via phone and email. Upcoming phases include an interface designed for ship captains and further development of the JIT tool before onboard testing begins.
The operational validation testing has demonstrated that different stakeholders within a port can operate on the same platform alongside port and shipping representatives, exchanging ship information and requests in real-time. This platform is strategically designed to support the port community and will continue to evolve through operational validation and feedback, addressing the operational needs of each stakeholder and integrating with their existing systems as they become operational.
OCIANA® also provides comprehensive value to the port community as a whole, presenting a unique source of truth where all parties view the same data simultaneously, reducing version control issues and disputes over "who said what." The platform also features complete auditability, tracking each submission, confirmation, rejection, and modification, thereby fostering compliance and continuous process improvement. Additionally, structured requests and automated notifications help decrease the volume of necessary phone calls and emails for a ship to adhere to its schedule.
In conclusion, OCIANA® is an international provider specializing in maritime intelligence, assisting organizations in transitioning from awareness to action. Whether under defense and security missions or within the maritime supply chain community, OCIANA® enables smarter planning of voyages and resources, effectively reducing fuel consumption, mitigating port congestion, and enhancing vessel rotation efficiencies.
