Conducted with insights from over 6,200 locations, the annual survey showcases the pressing challenges restaurant operators face relating to labor shortages, profit margins, and changing customer preferences.

Labor and Food Costs on the Rise


The survey highlighted that an overwhelming 88% of participants reported increasing labor costs. This trend mirrors last year's figures, indicating that profit margins may continue to tighten for restaurant owners. Notably, 41% of operators faced labor cost increases between 6% to 14%, while a concerning 8% experienced hikes over 15%. Such conditions not only limit operational capacity but also threaten overall industry growth.

Similarly, food costs are escalating, with 86% of respondents noting price increases. The trends echo through menu adjustments, as nearly 61% of those surveyed opted for price hikes in response to the new economic landscape.

In light of a high turnover rate—39% of operators seeing it in the range of 11% to 25%—the survey underscored the importance of employee training. Currently, 58% provide one to two hours of training per week, with a focus on improving both staff competency and guest satisfaction.

Consumer preferences are also shifting, with 34% of restaurant operators anticipating greater demand for takeout and delivery services, coupled with an increasing concern for healthier meal options. Additionally, one-fourth of respondents predict fewer dine-in visits, requiring adaptable strategies.

As nearly half of these leaders revealed that third-party delivery services comprise 11% to 30% of their revenue, it's crucial for operators to focus on catering to a market pivoting towards convenience.
