On November 2, 2025, Kyoya Akazawa of the Okayama University track and field team made an impressive stride at the 57th National University Ekiden Championship. Competing as the final runner for the Japan University Federation’s select team, Akazawa showcased his talent on a historic 106.8 km relay that stretched from Atsuta Shrine in Aichi Prefecture to Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture.

This prestigious event, often considered one of the three major university ekiden races in Japan, saw 27 teams participate in a challenging race across eight segments. Although Okayama University was not able to compete as a team, Akazawa made his mark personally by participating for the second consecutive year. His consistent performance has earned him accolades, as he has also completed every leg of the Izumo Ekiden and the National University Ekiden since last year.

In the eighth and final leg of the race, Akazawa finished in 17th place for his segment, crossing the line as the 16th overall graduate university team. His performance was remarkable, showing a significant improvement from 21st place last year. After completing the race, Akazawa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to run for the select team. He stated, “Although we couldn’t compete as a full team, I feel honored to represent the Japan University Federation in this ekiden. Running a different segment this year, I was driven by the desire to repay the regret of last year.”

Running as the anchor, Akazawa felt both the responsibility and pressure that comes with the role. Supported by the warm cheers from onlookers, he successfully crossed the finish line, finding solace in the shared experiences with outstanding athletes from all over the country. “This has been a valuable experience, and I aim to bring back what I learned to my team,” he added. “Next year, I will work harder for us to qualify as a team.”

The Okayama University track and field team is currently in training and hopes to secure spots in both the Izumo Ekiden and the National University Ekiden next year. The team continues to strive for excellence and achievements that elevate the university’s reputation within the athletic community.
