Elkem Introduces Innovative Recycled Silicones for Sustainable Labeling Solutions

Elkem Launches Groundbreaking Recycled Silicones for Label Industry

Elkem ASA has recently announced the addition of two innovative products to its SILCOLEASE® lineup, specifically designed for release liners in the labeling sector. These new additions signify Elkem's ongoing dedication to sustainability and reflect a significant advancement in the circular economy within the silicones industry.

Revolutionary Product Range

The newly launched products, SILCOLEASE® RE POLY 11362 and SILCOLEASE® RE POLY 368, are fully recycled, solvent-free silicones that promise to uphold the high-performance standards expected from their conventional counterparts. According to Agnès Jolly, head of research technology for silicone fluids at Elkem, these products not only deliver the same trusted non-stick properties but also contribute to a more eco-friendly approach in manufacturing.

Commitment to Circularity

Elkem's sustainability initiative is further reinforced by the introduction of these silicones, which are derived from a patented depolymerization process developed at Elkem's advanced recycling pilot unit located in Saint Fons, France. The innovative technology enables these products to have a 70% lower carbon footprint in comparison to non-recycled options, setting a new benchmark for the industry.

Elkem’s aspiration to drive circularity is linked to its commitment to meeting the increasing market demand for sustainable solutions. This aligns with a wider trend in the industry as companies pivot towards environmentally friendly practices and products.

Successful Trials and Performance

Before the formal launch, Elkem conducted rigorous trials alongside Kroenert GmbH & Co KG, a prominent manufacturer of coating machines based in Hamburg, Germany. The preliminary results have been promising, showing that the recycled silicones performed on par with virgin silicone products, even under high-speed processing conditions. Ralf Thiel, a process technology engineer at Kroenert, asserted that this consistency in performance highlights the potential for a sustainable overhaul in the use of silicones in the labeling sector.

Engaging the Industry

To further display its commitment to innovation and sustainability, Elkem will host a webinar on May 15, featuring industry experts from Elkem and AWA (Alexander Watson Associates). The session will discuss the specific outcomes of this pioneering innovation, examining its compatibility with industry sustainability strategies and how it can benefit various stakeholders.
