Civic Creative Base Tokyo: A Hub for Innovation and Artistic Exploration

Civic Creative Base Tokyo (CCBT) is currently experiencing a wave of exciting events as part of its renewal and relocation efforts. Nestled in the heart of Harajuku, CCBT has adopted the theme "The Commons of the Future" for its artistic fellowship in 2025. This initiative showcases a variety of projects aimed at exploring the dynamics of shared societal spaces in an evolving urban environment.

The current artist fellows — Maki Ueda, Yuma Kishi, Itsuki Doi, Sakiko Fujishima, and Shota Yamauchi — are actively collaborating with CCBT to implement five distinct projects that leverage arts and technology to enhance the perception of our collective spaces. Among the featured projects is Maki Ueda’s unique exploration of olfactory art titled "Olfacto-Politics: The Air as a Medium." This groundbreaking showcase merges education, research, and expressive practices of scent, enabling visitors to contextualize the shared air we breathe through an artistic lens. Ueda's installation at the Yume-no-shima Tropical Botanical Garden invites guests to engage with the sensory qualities of the environment, enhancing awareness of scents and their interplay with our surroundings.

Yuma Kishi’s project, "Parallel Botanical Garden," examines contemporary artificial intelligence from a botanical perspective, inviting attendees to experience an interactive sound and light installation in the serene setting of Urban Forest Park. This innovative approach blends technology with nature, prompting reflections on how plants and AI might interact.

Itsuki Doi focuses on microclimates, fostering public engagement through real-time weather data collected by participants. His installation, "New Weather," showcases how personal interpretations of weather can impact experiences and perceptions in public spaces.

Meanwhile, Sakiko Fujishima's game installation, "Coenoquest — The Save Data Left in the City," invites attendees to traverse a virtual city, collecting voices and narratives that often go unheard. This innovative interplay with gaming and social issues emphasizes the importance of individual stories in shaping community dynamics.

Lastly, Shota Yamauchi's upcoming exhibition, "In Between...Us?" features an immersive experience where light, sound, and movement intersect, revealing hidden dimensions of environmental interactions.
