U.S. Navy Integrates Raytheon’s StormBreaker Smart Weapon into Super Hornet Fleet
The U.S. Navy has officially greenlit the deployment of Raytheon's StormBreaker smart weapon on its fleet of F/A-18-E/F Super Hornet strike fighters. This significant advancement promises to greatly enhance the operational capabilities of the Super Hornet, offering an integrated solution for conducting precision strikes under a variety of conditions.
StormBreaker stands out as a unique operational asset capable of engaging both moving and stationary targets in challenging weather scenarios, whether over land or sea. The weapon's compact design allows a single Super Hornet to target more surface objectives than was previously feasible, thus reducing the time aircrews spend in precarious situations while significantly increasing overall fleet lethality and survivability.
"The Super Hornet is a vital component of the Navy's aerial combat strategy, and equipping it with StormBreaker significantly boosts its effectiveness by enabling precision strikes in all weather conditions," said Sam Deneke, President of Air & Space Defense Systems at Raytheon. "The advanced accuracy and adaptability of StormBreaker provide operators with a distinct advantage, allowing them to achieve mission objectives while ensuring their safe return."
Historically, in 2023, the Super Hornet became the first aircraft in the U.S. Navy to successfully carry and employ StormBreaker, demonstrating impressive performance during combat operations. This versatile weapon is not only approved for use on the Super Hornet but is also integrated into the F-15E and is in the process of being incorporated into the F-35A/B/C platforms.
