Afro+ Fest: A New Era for Global Black Music in D.C.

The excitement is palpable as Washington, D.C. prepares to host Afro+ Fest, the East Coast's inaugural large-scale festival dedicated to celebrating the full spectrum of global Black music and culture. Set to take place on August 31, 2025, at the RFK Festival Grounds, this festival promises to be unlike anything the region has seen before.

Headlining Acts and Lineup

With an expected attendance of around 20,000 fans, the festival has secured a star-studded lineup headlined by acclaimed artists Gunna and Asake. They will be joined by an array of A-list talent, including Gabzy, DJ Tunez, Foggie Raw, Machel Montano, and many others, culminating with a performance from the sensational Shy Glizzy, a local hero in D.C. This diverse lineup illustrates the festival's commitment to showcasing the musical richness from across the African diaspora.

A Vision Brought to Life

Michael Awosanya, the founder and executive producer of Afro+ Fest, expresses his vision with great enthusiasm, saying, "This is the block party we've dreamed about for a decade." Supported by key figures like Mayor Muriel Bowser and Events DC, this festival embodies a movement that celebrates not just music but community, culture, and creativity.

What started as a vision during college has transformed into a cultural phenomenon designed to uplift communities that have historically shaped Black music globally. Awosanya states that the festival aims to impact not only through music but also by providing real opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs within the D.C. area.

Experience the Festival

Afro+ Fest will not only be a musical experience but a vibrant gathering filled with immersive art installations, a variety of global cuisine, fashion activations, and a marketplace showcasing Black-owned brands and local creators. It's an invitation to all ages to connect, celebrate, and share in the joy of cultural expression. As Awosanya puts it, this is an opportunity for everyone, especially allies of the Black creative community, to come together in a joyful celebration.
