Toyota Unveils 2025 North America Environmental Sustainability Report

On December 4, 2025, Toyota Motor North America published its annual Environmental Sustainability Report for North America, outlining the company’s commitments and accomplishments toward sustainability. This detailed report focuses on significant strategies and outcomes in their ongoing journey towards achieving carbon neutrality and promoting sustainable practices.

Key Highlights from the Report

Tim Hilgeman, Senior Director of Environmental Sustainability at Toyota, emphasized the company's vision to create a positive impact on both society and the planet. The report covers various initiatives Toyota has undertaken across the United States, Canada, and Mexico to reduce environmental footprints. It showcases four primary areas: carbon offset, circular economy, water conservation, and biodiversity.

Carbon Initiatives

The report states that 83% of Toyota and Lexus models available for purchase or lease in North America now offer electric options, with more models on the horizon. Notably, the company achieved a 32% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to fiscal year 2019. Furthermore, by the end of fiscal year 2025, 114 dealerships participated in Toyota’s environmental integration program, resulting in a 20% reduction in the use of non-renewable electricity.

Commitment to Circular Economy

Toyota reached a 75% reduction in single-use plastics in its on-site dining services, meeting its five-year goal. Additionally, there was nearly a 31% decrease in the use of single-use packaging materials, surpassing the target aimed at reducing waste by 25% over five years.

Water Conservation Measures

In fiscal year 2025, Toyota successfully reduced water usage by 6.7% per vehicle compared to fiscal year 2021. The overall water consumption also saw a 15% decline from fiscal year 2024 figures and 40% from fiscal year 2020. These measures reflect Toyota's dedication to preserving water resources and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

Biodiversity Efforts

In collaboration with the Pollinator Partnership and the National Environmental Education Foundation, Toyota developed 6,185 acres of pollinator habitats in fiscal year 2025, increasing the total to 20,616 acres since 2022. Their conservation programs across 17 facilities, covering nearly 640 acres, were recognized with the Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation Certificate.

Toyoto's use of the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment tool helped identify the top ten facilities excelling in biodiversity relevance.

Looking Ahead

Moving forward, Toyota remains steadfast in its global commitment to sustainability with the implementation of its upcoming 8th Environmental Action Plan. This plan aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, emphasize the importance of a circular economy, and foster nature-positive initiatives.

As Sandra Phillips, Director of Sustainability at Toyota North America, articulates, "We have an unwavering commitment to sustainability that encompasses our integrated processes and our approach to developing our workforce, investing in communities, and creating accessible products for consumers."
