BayPort Foundation's Charity Golf Classic Achieves Record Fundraising Total of $232,920

BayPort Foundation's 5th Annual Charity Golf Classic

On May 12, 2026, the BayPort Foundation held its 5th Annual Charity Golf Classic at the scenic James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia. This year's event achieved remarkable success, raising a total of $232,920 to support community initiatives and scholarships. With the input of 112 players and the backing of 47 generous sponsors, the event showcased the collaborative spirit of the community and its commitment to fostering educational opportunities.

A Record-Breaking Year

This year's fundraising effort brings the Foundation’s total contributions over five years to a staggering $1.8 million. Businesses and community leaders rallied together under the Foundation's mission to uplift local education and community programs. Among the Platinum Sponsors were prominent companies like Candescent, Lucro Commercial Solutions, North River Construction, and Velera, all of whom contributed significantly to the overall success of the tournament.

The charity golf classic wasn't just about golf; it also featured the 3rd Annual Wine Tasting and Dinner. Held at Circa 1918 in Newport News, the evening included a sumptuous five-course meal crafted by Chef Chad Martin, perfectly paired with South American wines curated by Matt Earnhardt of Winebow Fine Wines and Spirits.

Expanding Scholarship Opportunities

One of the most exciting announcements made during the event came from BayPort President/CEO and Foundation Chairman, Jim Mears. He revealed plans to expand the annual scholarship funding from $100,000 to $150,000 starting next year. This increase is designed to meet the growing needs of students in the area and to offer more robust support for educational pathways. The revamped scholarship program aims to facilitate a successful transition for students wishing to follow a 2x2 educational route, where they will complete two years at a community college before transferring to a four-year university.

In addition to benefiting potential college students, the enhanced scholarship framework will allow greater flexibility for adult learners seeking vocational training or college education. This broadening of scope reflects the Foundation's commitment to making education accessible for all members of the community.

Support for Local Organizations

Beyond scholarships, the BayPort Foundation continues its tradition of pursuing community welfare through grants to vital local organizations. Recent beneficiaries include the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, Habitat for Humanity, Peake Childhood Center, Peninsula Rescue Mission, and the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. Furthermore, the Foundation cooperates with educational institutions to enhance workforce development initiatives, collaborating with both Newport News Public Schools and Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
