Overview of Hello Storage Users Survey 2025
Area Link Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), which operates one of Japan's largest rental trunk rooms, Hello Storage, has unveiled insights from its user survey targeting 31,275 applicants. The results detail how trunk rooms are utilized across various age groups and living environments, illustrating the evolving role of trunk rooms in different life stages.
Reasons for Utilizing Trunk Rooms
The survey indicates that the primary reason for using trunk rooms is related to transitions such as "moving/reforming/building" (31.7%), closely followed by "storing work tools/office organization" (31.1%). Other notable reasons include "home organization" (18.4%) and "hobby/personal items storage" (14.6%), showcasing a wide array of practical use cases. Meanwhile, other reasons collectively constituted 4.3% of responses.
An interesting trend emerges when analyzing usage by age group: the need for trunk rooms often coincides with moving or changing living situations. About 49.4% of users in their 20s reported utilizing trunk rooms for this purpose. Similarly, a significant percentage of older age groups, including 42.1% of the 70s, 46.3% of the 80s, and 45.5% of the 90s populations, reflect a consistent trend of using trunk rooms as living conditions change with age, exceeding a 40% usage rate.
Moreover, the need for "home organization" grows with age as well. Just 19.3% of users in their 30s utilize trunk rooms for this purpose, but the numbers rise to 25.7% for the 50s, 28.7% for the 60s, 35.0% for the 80s, and finally, 36.4% for the 90s. This data indicates that older individuals tend to rely on trunk room options more for organizing their living spaces as they age.
Shifting Living Environments Across Age Groups
Current living conditions show a near-equal split between homeownership (50.9%) and rental (49.1%) situations. A closer look reveals that 43.5% reside in rental apartments, while 31.3% own single-family homes, 19.6% occupy owned apartment buildings, and 5.6% rent single-family homes.
For younger individuals in their teens to 40s, living in rental apartments prevails, but those from the 50s onward shift significantly toward owning single-family homes. Interestingly, 90-somethings also trend back towards renting apartments, illustrating how living arrangements can fluctuate with age.
The Evolving Role of Trunk Rooms Based on Life Stages
Findings from the Hello Storage user survey reveal that trunk room purposes adapt significantly through various life stages. While the predominant reason among all age groups remains moving, particularly for those between 20 and 40, the demand for trunk room storage grows with the need for home organization as individuals enter the 50s and onward. This suggests that trunk rooms serve not just as temporary storage solutions during relocations but also as essential support for lifestyle changes and home organization.
In terms of living conditions, the balance between homeownership and rentals appears equal overall, but notable distinctions arise across different age demographics. Younger individuals mainly inhabit rental apartments, while homeowners increasingly occupy single-family homes as they age.
These insights emphasize that trunk rooms offer flexible storage solutions tailored to shifting living situations and changing lifestyles. As the demands of daily life expand and living conditions evolve, trunk rooms will likely play an increasingly integral role in helping individuals manage their spaces effectively.
