O'Shaughnessy Ventures Supports Groundbreaking Research on Dark Matter by Astrophysicist Jenny Wagner

O'Shaughnessy Ventures Backs Astrophysicist Challenging Dark Matter Theories

O'Shaughnessy Ventures LLC (OSV), an innovative investment firm dedicated to empowering creatives, has recently granted the O'Shaughnessy Fellowship to Jenny Wagner, an astrophysicist from Saarbrücken, Germany. This fellowship provides a unique platform for Wagner to explore pivotal questions regarding the existence and abundance of dark matter in our universe—a subject that has spurred debate among scientists for decades.

Understanding Dark Matter

Dark matter, although invisible and undetectable directly, is essential for explaining the movement and behavior of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Traditionally, the consensus among astrophysicists has been that dark matter constitutes a substantial portion of the universe's total mass. However, Wagner’s innovative research suggests that this conclusion may be significantly influenced by assumptions embedded within theoretical models used to interpret astronomical observations.

Inspired by her previous research into gravitational lensing—the phenomenon where light bends around massive cosmic entities—Wagner is set to investigate how much of the so-called "missing mass" could actually be detectable ordinary matter that's simply overlooked. Through detailed studies of galaxy motion within clusters, she aims to discern the genuine nature of dark matter and whether discrepancies in current models result from inherent biases.

A Year of Discovery Ahead

Over the next year, Wagner plans to analyze at least two significant cosmic structures, with the objective of producing enlightening outreach videos to share her findings with the public. This initiative aims not only to advance scientific understanding but also to engage and educate a broader audience about the complexities of the universe.

Jenny Wagner: A Research Trailblazer

Wagner’s impressive academic background includes a physics diploma and doctorate from Heidelberg University, where she initially focused her research on cancer and machine learning. However, her transition to astrophysics began in earnest in 2014 when she received a prestigious grant from the German Research Foundation. In recognition of her groundbreaking work on gravitational lensing, she was awarded the Prize for Courageous Science by Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of Science, Research, and Arts in 2020.

Presently, Wagner holds positions as a visiting scientist at both the Helsinki Institute of Physics and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taipei, further solidifying her reputation in the scientific community.

A Vision for Change

Jim O’Shaughnessy, OSV’s founder and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm for Wagner's project, noting, “Researches like hers are exactly why we launched the O'Shaughnessy Fellowships. She follows the evidence wherever it leads, even challenging established beliefs.”

Wagner herself states, “I am over the moon to be the first astrophysicist to receive an O'Shaughnessy Fellowship. The OSV community resonates with my values, and I am grateful for the support to pursue research that holds the potential to transform our understanding of the universe.”

The Future of the O'Shaughnessy Fellowships

Established in 2023, the O'Shaughnessy Fellowships program's purpose is to identify and nurture visionary creators, builders, and researchers across various fields. Each fellow receives a grant of up to $100,000 and benefits from OSV's extensive network of industry leaders, investors, and other experts. For 2026, up to 20 fellowships will be awarded, promoting innovative ideas and projects like Wagner’s.

Wagner is the thirteenth recipient announced for this year. More details about previous fellows and application dates for future fellowships are available on the OSV website. Applications for the O'Shaughnessy Fellowships are slated to reopen on January 1, 2027, offering another opportunity for pioneering individuals to bring their ambitions to life.
