Celebrating a Century of Tradition with 'Fanfare: Dance of the Fan'
Matsuya Ginza, a prominent name in Tokyo's retail scene, is preparing to unveil a stunning textile installation titled
'Fanfare: Dance of the Fan', crafted by renowned textile designer
Reiko Sudō (founder of NUNO) and exhibition designer
Adrien Gardère. This marks the
Tokyo premiere of the installation, running from
October 2, 2025, to November 3, 2025, as part of the store's celebration of its
100th anniversary.
The installation represents a collaboration with artisans from ten different regions across Japan, including
BUAISOU from Tokushima. Using the motif of a fan, 'Fanfare' will fill the historic
Space of Ginza, a grand atrium within Matsuya Ginza, creating a dynamic visual experience. The installation not only showcases the artistry of
Japanese textile crafts but also emphasizes the significance of community collaboration in preserving and innovating traditional techniques.
A Tribute to Craftsmanship
'Dance of the Fan' is a large-scale work designed to overflow with the elegance of textiles transformed into vibrant, fan-shaped structures. Since its first exhibition at the
John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2017, this piece has captivated audiences across various venues in Japan and abroad.
The installation's design embodies
'suehiro-gari'—a term reflecting the notion of good fortune and prosperity associated with fans. As it celebrates Matsuya's century-long journey, the towering display will reach approximately
25 meters, making it one of the largest of its kind seen in the venue.
Collaboration with Local Artisans
NUNO has a longstanding reputation for merging traditional craftsmanship with modern design aesthetics. For this particular installation, fabrics produced by skilled artisans in regions spanning from
Fukuoka to Yamagata will come to life in a stunning exhibition of textile art that speaks to the heart of Japanese culture. This collaboration intertwines ancient dyeing methods with contemporary technology, allowing visitors to appreciate the depth of textile artistry.
Additionally, a new take on #indigo dyeing by BUAISOU will see traditional elements, such as the symbolic
'Matsukaku' (pine crane) mark, featured on specially dyed fans, enriching the narrative of the installation. This collaborative project will also unveil the first textiles from a new brand,
BUNO, a partnership between BUAISOU and NUNO, showcasing
Awashi-jijira weaving.
An Interactive Experience
Visitors will not only observe the installation but also engage directly with textiles through touch, deepening their understanding of the craft behind each piece. The
'Touch the Fabric' section will provide a hands-on experience, allowing attendees to feel the fabric and learn about its origins, while a projection area will display videos capturing the intricate processes of textile production.
The exhibition aims to bridge the gap between art and sensory experience, bringing Japan's rich
dying and weaving culture to life. It invites attendees to immerse themselves in the stories woven into each textile, celebrating both the craftsmanship and the community that supports it.
