Free Lung Cancer Screenings Available for Louisianans This November

Free Lung Cancer Screenings in Louisiana This November

November is marking Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Lung Association is encouraging residents of Louisiana to utilize the opportunity for free lung cancer screenings. This generous initiative runs until November 30, aimed at providing eligible individuals with the means to detect lung cancer early, a vital step in combating this serious disease.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths throughout Louisiana and the United States. Early detection through screening can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment. The screening process is performed via a low-dose CT scan, a fast, non-invasive procedure that typically lasts only a few minutes.

According to Allie Kelsey, manager of Health Promotions at the American Lung Association, “This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we’re encouraging Louisianans to take action against lung cancer by checking if you or a loved one is eligible for free lung cancer screening through the Louisiana Lung Cancer Screening Initiative.”

The initiative's significance stems from the fact that lung cancer adversely affects countless families throughout Louisiana. Kelsey emphasizes that the opportunity for screening not only represents hope but also serves as a crucial step towards saving lives.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for the lung cancer screening, individuals must meet specific criteria:
Age: Between 50 to 80 years.
Smoking History: At least a 20 pack-year smoking history, meaning one pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years.
* Current and Former Smokers: Individuals who currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years.

The procedure involves taking multiple X-ray images as the patient lies on a table that moves in and out of the machine, creating a detailed overview of the lungs. This method is recognized for being safe, effective, and typically covered by most health insurance plans.

Individuals interested in participating in the Louisiana Lung Cancer Screening Initiative can contact a Lung Health Navigator at 844-ALA-LUNG (844-252-5864). These navigators are available to assist callers in identifying local lung cancer screening centers, understanding insurance coverage, and addressing any financial issues that may hinder access to care. They can also provide valuable lung health resources and educational materials.

Importantly, while most insurance plans cover low-dose CT scans, the American Lung Association is committed to covering the screening costs for those without insurance.
