Sicona Battery Technologies Secures $45M Grant to Boost Battery Materials Production
In a significant move for the Australian battery manufacturing sector, Sicona Battery Technologies has been awarded a $45 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). This funding is aimed at establishing the company's first commercial-scale production facility for silicon-carbon battery anode materials in the Illawarra region.
The facility, located at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla precinct, is central to Sicona's mission to amplify production of its advanced silicon-carbon anode material known as SiCx®. With an output capacity of up to 230 tonnes annually, Sicona aims to fulfill the growing demands for high-quality battery materials and simultaneously secure qualification with advanced customer partnerships and agreements.
Sicona’s innovative SiCx® technology boasts impressive enhancements to traditional lithium-ion battery performance. By increasing the energy density by over 20% and allowing for charging speeds that are over 40% faster compared to conventional graphite, the technology positions itself as a game-changer in battery manufacturing. Additionally, this technology integrates seamlessly with existing lithium-ion battery production lines, making it easier for battery manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to adopt Sicona's products.
The $45 million grant is part of the Australian Government's Battery Breakthrough Initiative, which emphasizes the importance of strengthening domestic battery manufacturing capabilities while enhancing Australia’s role within the global battery supply chain. For Sicona, this grant not only signifies a step forward in scaling operations but also reflects the company's transition from technology development to commercial realization. Sicona is thrilled to showcase that Australia can leverage its resources to become a competitive player in higher-value battery material supply chains, diversifying its industry away from mere mineral exports.
Christiaan Jordaan, the Founder and CEO of Sicona Battery Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the ARENA support, stating, "This backing serves as a robust endorsement of both Sicona's technology and Australia's capability to manufacture globally relevant battery materials. The technological advancements we’ve developed are tailored to meet the demands of battery-powered industries that require enhanced performance at lower costs."
Sicona's technology is not limited to electric vehicles (EVs). Jordaan points out that there is a rapidly growing demand for high-performance battery materials across various sectors, including AI data centers, drones, robotics, and power tools. The firm's Wollongong facility is set to validate production processes on a commercial level, allowing them to cater to customers promptly while expanding into multiple market segments.
The establishment of the new facility is expected to create approximately 36 skilled manufacturing jobs, providing significant economic benefits to the local community. It also emphasizes Sicona’s intention to invest in workforce development and training, thereby creating numerous local industry partnerships.
This grant follows Sicona’s strategic partnership with Himadri in India, which was announced in May 2025 and represents an additional investment aimed at broadening their international footprint. Additionally, the company is planning to expand production capacity further, with a vision for a larger facility that could accommodate up to 26,500 tonnes annually.
Through its unique approach and cutting-edge technology, Sicona aims to lead the way in the battery materials sector and solidify its position not just in Australia, but in the global market. As the world transitions to net-zero economies and increased reliance on smart technology, companies like Sicona are crucial players in ensuring the advancement of sustainable energy solutions.
