Zambia and Huawei Unveil Innovative Global Smart Village Showcase at MWC Barcelona 2025
In a landmark event at MWC Barcelona 2025, the Ministry of Technology and Science of Zambia collaborated with Huawei to unveil the Global Smart Village Showcase. This initiative aims to explore new pathways for digital transformation within rural communities, providing insights into how technology can revolutionize local living. Over 200 leaders from various industries gathered to discuss the strategies for national transformation powered by digital innovations.
The Smart Village project has already seen its first successful installation in July 2024, where a fully operational smart village was built in just 30 days. This village is equipped with essential utilities such as electricity and internet access, facilitating telemedicine and remote learning, which are critical for enhancing the quality of life in rural areas.
Li Junfeng, Vice President at Huawei and CEO of the Global Public Sector Business Unit, emphasized the role of digital transformation in empowering national capabilities and improving citizens' well-being. According to Li, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a crucial driver in the digital transformation efforts. The integration of AI technologies is not merely a technological advancement, but a fundamental shift in production dynamics.
Through partnerships with global allies, Huawei aims to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the digital era and accelerate the development of smarter, more sustainable governance solutions. Koh Hong-Eng, Global Chief Public Services Industry Scientist at Huawei, moderated discussions at the event, fostering exchanges on national digital transformations and best practices.
Speaking at the forum, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix C. Mutati, articulated that the Smart Village initiative is consistent with Zambia's Vision 2030. He stated that smart education facilitates knowledge for the younger generation while arming them with necessary digital skills to thrive in the fourth industrial revolution.
Mutati commented, "Digital transformation in Zambia transcends technology; it's about the people, progress, and potential. We are committed to empowering communities, reducing inequalities, and paving the way for all Zambians to meaningfully contribute to national development."
Huawei firmly believes in the motto of "Accelerating Government and Public Services Intelligence - Building a Cognitive Society Together". The company is consistently expanding its business scenarios, promoting an extensive adoption of digital technologies to achieve a vision of better governance, improved livelihoods, and a stronger economy. This approach will support governments worldwide in building a digital society that is equitable, efficient, and sustainable.
As the Global Smart Village Showcase unfolds, it marks a significant stride towards integrating innovative solutions into the everyday lives of citizens, setting a precedent for future projects aimed at fostering digital inclusivity in developing regions. With initiatives like these, there is hope for a brighter, more connected future, where technology and human ingenuity converge to uplift communities worldwide.
