The Impact of AI on Interior Design: Insights from Mattoboard's Report
In November 2025, Mattoboard, a pioneering platform that digitizes interior design studios through virtual 3D material sampling, released its first-ever State of AI & Interior Design Report. This comprehensive report aims to shed light on the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the interior design sector, presenting both the benefits and the anxieties expressed by designers regarding AI's role in creative processes.
The AI Paradox
A survey encompassing over 300 designers uncovered a significant paradox within the industry: while there is a prevalent adoption of AI tools, fears surrounding creative integrity persist. A staggering
82% of designers utilize AI on a regular basis, with
71% expressing a positive outlook towards its potential to enhance creativity. Despite this optimism, concerns loom large. Over half of the respondents (54%) voiced worries about the loss of originality due to AI's influence, while
44% raised ethical concerns such as plagiarism and bias. Moreover,
39% feared a decline in genuine creativity as a result of integrating AI into their workflows.
AI Tools Dominating the Market
Among the various tools available, designers have shown a notable preference for
ChatGPT, with
85% using it for support in their design tasks. Other tools like Canva, Photoshop, and Midjourney trailed behind with
38%,
33%, and
28% adoption rates, respectively. Interestingly, while designers frequently use AI for visualizing their concepts, only
21% believe that the most significant advantage of AI lies in creativity and ideation; a dominant
57% see speed and efficiency as AI's primary benefit.
Generational Insights into AI Utilization
The report also highlights intriguing generational patterns surrounding AI usage within the design community. Designers aged 55-64 lead in the adoption of AI visualization, showcasing a robust
77% rate. This age group also reported the highest satisfaction levels with existing tools at
65%. In contrast, younger designers (18-24 years old) experienced heightened anxiety regarding AI's repercussions on original creative thinking, with
66% indicating concern, despite leading in daily AI usage at
53%.
Optimism for AI’s Future in Interior Design
Despite underlying concerns, the sentiment towards AI remains largely optimistic. Approximately
58% of designers expressed satisfaction with current AI tools, while
42% reported dissatisfaction. Notably,
76% believe that AI will positively influence the interior design field in the coming years.
Desired Features in Future AI Tools
As designers look forward to the next wave of AI tool development, they have specific requests to fit their unique workflows:
- - 71% desire easier visualization using actual products.
- - 62% wish for tools that translate AI visuals into tangible materials.
- - 59% have requested the ability to convert AI outputs into real-world drawings.
- - 51% want improvements in material sourcing and selection tools.
The analysis reveals a clear demand, especially among students (90%) for material translation capabilities, while experienced professionals aged 45-54 prioritize visualization tools connected to real products (85%).
Current Trends in Material Selection
As the interior design landscape evolves, certain trends have emerged prominently. A significant
73% of designers describe their material palettes as
