Tohoku Dream Project in Tokyo 2026
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO), led by Chairman Kunio Ishizuka, has been a pillar of support for communities affected by the East Japan Earthquake since its occurrence. With over 370 outreach concerts conducted to date, the orchestra has prioritized revitalization efforts through music. The ‘Tohoku Dream Project’ aims to foster and celebrate the cultural richness of the Tohoku region, especially among children deeply engaged in local performing arts such as singing, playing in brass bands, and other artistic endeavors.
On January 7, 2026, the JPO will host an inspiring event titled “Tohoku Dream Project in Tokyo 2026 – Bringing the Sparkle of Tohoku's Children to Tokyo” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro. This event marks the 15th anniversary of the disaster and serves as a celebration of the growth, resilience, and artistic talents of the children from the region.
This unique concert will feature local Tohoku groups: the Akazawa Yari Kenbu from Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture and the Choral Club from southern Fukushima Prefecture. These children have been given the opportunity to perform alongside professional orchestral musicians, creating a space for artistic exchange and mutual growth. This collaborative experience not only enriches the cultural tapestry of the event but also empowers the children, allowing them to shine brightly in front of a broader audience.
The concert is designed in three segments. The first half will feature orchestral pieces including the overture of Johann Strauss II’s operetta “Die Fledermaus” and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, with renowned pianist Ayako Uehara as the soloist. The second part will showcase performances by the children, highlighting traditional Tohoku arts and singing skills. Finally, the third segment brings together both the children and the orchestra, culminating in performances of “Hoshimeguri no Uta” by Kenji Miyazawa and Ravel’s famous “Boléro.”
Tickets for the event will be available in three categories, ensuring accessibility for all. General admission seats are priced at ¥4,000 for S seats, ¥3,000 for A seats, and ¥2,000 for Youth seats (for those 25 years old and under). The event is expected to bring attention to the incredible talents of Tohoku’s youth and foster a spirit of hope and community across Japan.
As a part of the Tohoku Dream Project, JPO has taken the initiative to host workshops, mini-concerts, and lessons that allow professional musicians to engage directly with children from various regions. Reports from participants have highlighted how these encounters have sparked significant personal growth and confidence in the young performers. While many of these children's artistic pursuits remain unknown at the national level, this Tokyo concert aims to introduce their talents to a wider audience.
